an observatory ; a style of sacred edifice common with <strong>the</strong><br />

Chaldeans, and likely to form <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal object <strong>in</strong> every<br />

city and town devoted to <strong>the</strong> idolatry of Belus and <strong>the</strong><br />

worship of <strong>the</strong> stars."<br />

Protected by more than a hundred well-armed horsemen<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Turkish armv aga<strong>in</strong>st any possible<br />

molestation from<br />

<strong>the</strong> maraud<strong>in</strong>g Bedou<strong>in</strong>s, who were at open war with <strong>the</strong><br />

governor of Baghdad, Porter had <strong>the</strong> rare opportunity of<br />

<strong>in</strong>spect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> huge mass of build<strong>in</strong>gs known as El-Birs or<br />

Birs Nimrud, with a feel<strong>in</strong>g of absolute security and comfort.<br />

Rich and Buck<strong>in</strong>gham hav<strong>in</strong>g described <strong>the</strong> more<br />

essential features of this grandest of all Babylonian ru<strong>in</strong>s<br />

before, our traveller had noth<strong>in</strong>g to add, but <strong>the</strong> more to<br />

speculate on <strong>the</strong> probable age and cause of <strong>the</strong> destruction of<br />

this " Tower of Belus," of which aga<strong>in</strong> he left<br />

us four fairly<br />

good draw<strong>in</strong>gs, though <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ent details decidedly<br />

<strong>in</strong>ferior to <strong>the</strong> pen-and-<strong>in</strong>k sketch published by Rich. It<br />

was Porter's firm conviction that <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary ru<strong>in</strong> as<br />

it now stands, " and doubtless represent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Tower of<br />

Babel," is <strong>the</strong> work of three different periods and builders.<br />

As over aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> fundamental <strong>in</strong>vestigations of his two<br />

contemporaries, who by <strong>the</strong>ir accurate description and sober<br />

judgment of Babylonian ru<strong>in</strong>s so favorably contrasted with<br />

<strong>the</strong> uncritical method of <strong>the</strong> early travellers, we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong><br />

Porter's<br />

account of Birs (Nimrud) a certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation to fall<br />

back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> outlived fashion of previous centuries. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to his view, <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al tower built by Nimrod and<br />

" partially overturned by <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>e wrath," is still to be<br />

recognized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four lowest stages of <strong>the</strong> present rema<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

" In this ru<strong>in</strong>ous and abandoned state most likely <strong>the</strong><br />

tower rema<strong>in</strong>ed till Babylon was refounded by Semiramis,<br />

who, cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> shattered summit of <strong>the</strong> great pile with<br />

some new erection, would <strong>the</strong>re place her observatory and
