<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>scriptions, arose and stood before us. But how<br />

did all <strong>the</strong>se bodies come <strong>in</strong>to one common grave ? That<br />

this had not been <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>al tomb was very evident.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> Twentieth Dynasty, when <strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong> state<br />

began to fail, it<br />

was not possible to<br />

protect <strong>the</strong> rest<strong>in</strong>g-places of <strong>the</strong><br />

dead from thieves. In <strong>the</strong> different<br />

cemeteries <strong>the</strong> tombs were plundered,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> graves of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

which afforded rich spoil, were<br />

much sought after by <strong>the</strong> thieves.<br />

and royal relatives of <strong>the</strong> Twentyfirst<br />

Dynasty were buried here. Thus all <strong>the</strong> great k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

rested <strong>in</strong> peace, until <strong>the</strong>y were discovered bv <strong>the</strong> fellaheen.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong>y have been placed toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong>ir coff<strong>in</strong>s and<br />

treasures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum at Cairo. But it is doubtful<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r it will be possible to preserve from destruction <strong>the</strong>
