Two days later Buck<strong>in</strong>gham and Bell<strong>in</strong>o — <strong>the</strong> former <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> description and measurements ot Rich, also shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his view that this most nor<strong>the</strong>rn pile of ru<strong>in</strong>s could never<br />

have represented <strong>the</strong> tower of Belus, as had been so vigorously<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by Major Rennell. He po<strong>in</strong>ted out that<br />

<strong>the</strong> appearance of walls and portions of build<strong>in</strong>gs on its summit<br />

apparently constructed at different periods, <strong>the</strong> small<br />

quantity of rubbish accumulated around its base, and <strong>the</strong><br />
