Fur<strong>the</strong>r may be mentioned a ra<strong>the</strong>r mutilated temple of<br />

Rameses II., a smaller chapel founded by <strong>the</strong> same ruler <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town, as well as <strong>the</strong> large temple of <strong>the</strong> god Osiris.<br />

Enormous f<strong>in</strong>ds were made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> different bury<strong>in</strong>g-places<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> neighborhood of <strong>the</strong> town, dat<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> earliest to<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest times. Over fifteen thousand monuments are<br />

reported to have been discovered, and <strong>the</strong> catalogue alone<br />

published by Mariette shows over eight hundred tombstones,<br />

most of which belong to <strong>the</strong> Middle Empire and<br />

bear important <strong>in</strong>scriptions. At Dendera, <strong>the</strong> Greek Tentyra,<br />

<strong>the</strong> great sanctuary of <strong>the</strong> goddess of love, Hathor,<br />

built under <strong>the</strong> last Ptolemies, was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> cleared of<br />

rubbish, and numerous o<strong>the</strong>r temples and chapels <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

neighborhood were laid open. The numerous <strong>in</strong>scriptions<br />

and sculptures found cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> temple were copied and<br />

afterwards published <strong>in</strong><br />

large volumes.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> ground of ancient Thebes <strong>the</strong>re was hardly a<br />

known monument which was not exam<strong>in</strong>ed. On <strong>the</strong> east<br />

bank of <strong>the</strong> Nile, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> royal temple of Karnak, extensive<br />

excavations were undertaken, which were productive of<br />

numerous f<strong>in</strong>ds of <strong>in</strong>scriptions and o<strong>the</strong>r monuments. The<br />

discovery of <strong>the</strong> oldest part of <strong>the</strong> temple, which dates from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Middle Empire, be<strong>in</strong>g also a success, Mariette was <strong>in</strong> a<br />

position to fix <strong>the</strong> architectural history of <strong>the</strong>se temple build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir foundation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> Ptolemies down<br />

to <strong>the</strong> latest periods. On <strong>the</strong> west bank of <strong>the</strong> Nile, at<br />

Thebes, <strong>the</strong>re were laid open <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south <strong>the</strong> temple build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of Med<strong>in</strong>et Habu, and partly cleared of rubbish.<br />

<strong>the</strong> north, near Drah Abu'l-Nagga, <strong>the</strong> tombs belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Middle Empire were exam<strong>in</strong>ed, and <strong>the</strong> matchless<br />

terrace temple of Der el-Bahri was partly uncovered. In<br />

connection with <strong>the</strong> latter, on <strong>the</strong> middle terrace <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

relief sculptures represent<strong>in</strong>g an expedition <strong>in</strong> ships<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cense countrv of Punt were discovered.<br />
