632 EXPLORATIONS IN BIBLE LANDS<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir wish, <strong>the</strong> young scholar Karl Richard Lepsius was <strong>in</strong>trusted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> mission, and a staff of em<strong>in</strong>ent co-workers<br />

accompanied him, among o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong> architect Krbkam and<br />

<strong>the</strong> draughtsmen Karl and Ernst Weidenbach. The expedition<br />

under Champollion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> had been a voyage<br />

of discovery, concerned only with those monuments which<br />

chance happened to throw <strong>in</strong> his way. Lepsius, on <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hand, armed with greater knowledge of <strong>the</strong> localities<br />

to be exam<strong>in</strong>ed, could attempt to supply <strong>the</strong> gaps which his<br />

predecessor had left.<br />

Above all th<strong>in</strong>gs, he had set about to br<strong>in</strong>g historical<br />

order <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> arrangement of <strong>the</strong> monuments, to devote a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> amount of time to each monument, and later to place<br />

Egyptian history, art, and civilization on a permanent basis.<br />

That this methodical system was followed by <strong>the</strong> best results<br />

is well known to-day.<br />

The Prussian expedition began its explorations on <strong>the</strong><br />

pyramid field of Memphis, <strong>the</strong> importance of which did not<br />

seem to have struck Champollion and consequentlv had been<br />

left by him almost untouched. Lepsius, and especially Erbkam,<br />

undertook <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation of <strong>the</strong> pyramids which had<br />

been begun by Perr<strong>in</strong>g and Vyse, and attempted to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

history of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>se greatest of royal tombs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> world. They came to <strong>the</strong> conclusion that <strong>the</strong> Egyptian<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs did not raise up <strong>the</strong>se structures to <strong>the</strong>ir enormous<br />

height at one time. Every k<strong>in</strong>g began build<strong>in</strong>g his pyramid<br />

as soon as he ascended <strong>the</strong> throne, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g on verv small<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> order to be sure of his<br />

tomb even if he occupied <strong>the</strong><br />

throne only tor a short time. As his reign <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong><br />

years, so <strong>the</strong> pyramid <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> size by means of lay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on outside cas<strong>in</strong>gs. These monuments of <strong>the</strong> dead were<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore always commensurate with <strong>the</strong> lives of <strong>the</strong>ir builders.<br />

For if a k<strong>in</strong>g died while his pyramid was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course<br />

of construction, it was f<strong>in</strong>ished with an outside mantle or<br />

cas<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> pyramid thus correspond<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> size to <strong>the</strong> length
