<strong>the</strong> Ottoman government to send Hamdy Bey, Director<br />

General of <strong>the</strong> Imperial Archaeological Museum at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople,<br />

to Sidon <strong>in</strong> order to make fresh <strong>in</strong>vestigations<br />

at <strong>the</strong> place. These aga<strong>in</strong> brought to light magnificent<br />

sarcophagi, among <strong>the</strong>m that<br />

of Tabnith, <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong><br />

above-mentioned Eshmunazar, an <strong>in</strong>scription upon which<br />

agreed <strong>in</strong> part verbatim with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription on Eshmunazar's<br />

coff<strong>in</strong>. In connection with this sarcophagus it is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to note that no effort had even been made to remove<br />

<strong>the</strong> old hieroglvphic <strong>in</strong>scription and design. In this latter<br />

<strong>in</strong>scription <strong>the</strong> sarcophagus is said orig<strong>in</strong>ally to have been<br />

<strong>the</strong> tomb of an Egyptian general. The Phenician <strong>in</strong>scription<br />

was simply placed beneath <strong>the</strong> Egyptian. When <strong>the</strong><br />

coff<strong>in</strong> was found it still conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> well preserved body<br />

of Tabnith ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an unknown fluid.<br />

The so-called Alexander sarcophagus, however, surpasses<br />

all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r great and rich discoveries made by Hamdv<br />

Bey. It is a masterpiece of art from <strong>the</strong> best period of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Diadochs. It certa<strong>in</strong>ly is not <strong>the</strong> coff<strong>in</strong> of Alexander<br />

<strong>the</strong> Great himself, as has been supposed, for /Alexander lies<br />

buried <strong>in</strong> Alexandria, and his mausoleum was repeatedly<br />

visited by Roman emperors; but it is <strong>the</strong> coff<strong>in</strong> of one<br />

that stood near him, of one of his great generals. Above<br />

all, it is a work of art of <strong>the</strong> first rank, and fills every one<br />

that sees it with admiration.<br />

Of quite ano<strong>the</strong>r sort is <strong>the</strong> most recent archaeological<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d made on <strong>the</strong> soil of Palest<strong>in</strong>e. In <strong>the</strong> fall of 1896, <strong>in</strong><br />

Madaba, as <strong>the</strong> Greeks were build<strong>in</strong>g a new church on <strong>the</strong><br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s of an old basilica, a portion of <strong>the</strong> mosaic floor of <strong>the</strong><br />

old church came to light.<br />

This mosaic was found to represent<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g less than a map of Syria, Palest<strong>in</strong>e and Egypt.<br />

The greater part of it is unfortunately destroyed. Only<br />

remnants of <strong>the</strong> map of Palest<strong>in</strong>e and Egypt are preserved,<br />

amount<strong>in</strong>g to about fortv-n<strong>in</strong>e square vards <strong>in</strong> extent, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> part of admirable execution. The difference between
