The Siloam conduit<br />

which <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription was found served just this purpose.<br />

It conveyed <strong>the</strong> water entirely underground to <strong>the</strong> Pool of<br />

Siloam, which lay far<strong>the</strong>r below <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kidron Valley, but<br />

<strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> city wall. The conduit is cut through <strong>the</strong> rock<br />

<strong>in</strong> a ra<strong>the</strong>r crude manner ; here and <strong>the</strong>re even a rift <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rock appears to have been utilized. The length of <strong>the</strong><br />

conduit is about 583 yards. The 1200 cubits (about 689<br />

yards) mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription is probably only an estimate.<br />

In a straight l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> term<strong>in</strong>i are only 366 yards<br />

apart, <strong>the</strong> difference be<strong>in</strong>g due to <strong>the</strong> very tortuous course<br />

of <strong>the</strong> conduit. The statement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription that <strong>the</strong><br />

conduit was begun from both ends <strong>in</strong>ward is borne out by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> strokes of <strong>the</strong> chisel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn half<br />

go <strong>in</strong> an opposite direction from those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn half.<br />

This also accounts most readily for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g course of<br />

<strong>the</strong> conduit. The place where <strong>the</strong> workmen met may likewise<br />

still be recognized. We can also clearly see how <strong>the</strong><br />

men, before <strong>the</strong>y succeeded, and depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> sound<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir picks, made repeated but futile attempts to meet.<br />

The bl<strong>in</strong>d passages to be found, which are <strong>in</strong> reality abandoned<br />

galleries, also show that even long before <strong>the</strong>y met,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y more than once abandoned <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong>y were follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and took ano<strong>the</strong>r. That <strong>the</strong>y should never<strong>the</strong>less<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally come toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> this subterranean passage is a performance<br />

worthy of all recognition. We can expla<strong>in</strong> it only<br />

on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory that <strong>the</strong> one or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> upward<br />

shafts, which are still <strong>in</strong> existence, served also for giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

workmen <strong>the</strong> direction.<br />

The discoveries <strong>in</strong> Sidon br<strong>in</strong>g us to a later period. The<br />

unimportant little town of Sa'i'da was to all <strong>in</strong>tents completely<br />

unknown until <strong>the</strong> year 1855, when <strong>the</strong> attention<br />

of all Orientalists was drawn to it by <strong>the</strong> discovery of <strong>the</strong><br />

sarcophagus of K<strong>in</strong>g Eshmunazar. To <strong>the</strong> east of <strong>the</strong> town<br />
