DURING 19 CENTURY: PALESTINE 613<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r monument, that <strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of time is not so veryfar<br />

removed from this monument, is<br />

<strong>the</strong> Siloam <strong>in</strong>scription.<br />

This was found <strong>in</strong> 1880 by some boys (while bath<strong>in</strong>g) <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> conduit which connects St. Mary's Well with <strong>the</strong> Pool<br />

of Siloam, not far from its outlet <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> latter. The German<br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e Society immediately had it more closely exam<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

In order to make <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription, which lay partly<br />

<strong>in</strong> water, entirely accessible, <strong>the</strong> water <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conduit had to<br />

be lowered by clean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bottom. Then Shick and Gu<strong>the</strong><br />

made several copies and squeezes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription. Gu<strong>the</strong><br />

also succeeded <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g a plaster cast of it. On account<br />

of <strong>the</strong> peculiar conditions, <strong>the</strong>se were all<br />

very difficult operations,<br />

and <strong>in</strong> consequence of <strong>the</strong> foul air <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conduit<br />

Dr. Shick was taken ill.<br />

It is due to <strong>the</strong> labors of <strong>the</strong>se men that <strong>the</strong> text of <strong>the</strong><br />

Siloam <strong>in</strong>scription has <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> been ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed, though<br />

later it met with a fate similar to that of <strong>the</strong> Mesha stone.<br />

A certa<strong>in</strong> unscrupulous person, with an eye to bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

undertook to steal <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription, by break<strong>in</strong>g it out of <strong>the</strong><br />

rock ; and, as may be imag<strong>in</strong>ed, it was seriously damaged.<br />

Fortunately <strong>the</strong> Ottoman government succeeded <strong>in</strong> captur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> thief and his plunder, and <strong>the</strong> fragments of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription<br />

* are now <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>scription mentions no k<strong>in</strong>g, but appears to be<br />

merely a private production, so to speak ; <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words,<br />

not an order of <strong>the</strong> sovereign, but <strong>the</strong> impulse of <strong>the</strong> workmen<br />

led to its be<strong>in</strong>g cut. Its contents refer to <strong>the</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> conduit, <strong>the</strong> completion of which it evidently celebrates.<br />

It describes how at <strong>the</strong> pierc<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> conduit <strong>the</strong><br />

sharp picks of <strong>the</strong> diggers, who had begun at <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

ends and worked towards each o<strong>the</strong>r, suddenly met ; how<br />

when three cubits still rema<strong>in</strong>ed to be pierced, <strong>the</strong> workmen<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r with a cleverly made forgery, though no exact copy of <strong>the</strong> same<br />

<strong>in</strong>scription, which is now also exhibited at <strong>the</strong> Imperial Ottoman Museum<br />
