In spite of <strong>the</strong> claims made by those who advocate <strong>the</strong><br />

genu<strong>in</strong>eness of <strong>the</strong> Church of <strong>the</strong><br />

Sepulchre and who contend<br />

for <strong>the</strong> southward course of <strong>the</strong> second wall, <strong>the</strong><br />

question<br />

must never<strong>the</strong>less be looked upon as still entirely<br />

undecided. Schick rests his <strong>the</strong>ory, that <strong>the</strong> wall ran south<br />

and east of <strong>the</strong> Church of <strong>the</strong> Sepulchre, substantially upon<br />

Russian Exploration near <strong>the</strong> Holy Sepulchre<br />

<strong>the</strong> new discoveries which were made by <strong>the</strong> Russian Palest<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Society <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> excavations for <strong>the</strong><br />

Hospice east of <strong>the</strong> Church of <strong>the</strong> Sepulchre. These are<br />

parts of an ancient ditch hewn out of <strong>the</strong> natural rock, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s of walls. Schick regards <strong>the</strong>se as<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> second wall and of <strong>the</strong> city moat. His explanation,<br />

however, is not conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> itself, and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

stand opposed to it important considerations of a general<br />

nature. The elevation of <strong>the</strong> modern Golgotha and, more<br />

important still, <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g hill at <strong>the</strong> northwest corner
