of clay and stone which he had ga<strong>the</strong>red so scrupulously<br />

from Babylonian and Assyrian ru<strong>in</strong>s filled<br />

a comparatively<br />

small space, and for <strong>the</strong> greater part at present have<br />

little but historical value. But <strong>the</strong>se small beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> powerful germ which <strong>in</strong> due time produced<br />

<strong>the</strong> rich treasures now fill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> halls of <strong>the</strong> London<br />

Museum.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> fundamental work of Rich little was left for <strong>the</strong><br />

average European traveller to report<br />

on <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of Babylon<br />

and N<strong>in</strong>eveh, unless he possessed an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary gift<br />

of observation and discrim<strong>in</strong>ation, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with experience<br />

and technical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, archaeological taste, and a fair acqua<strong>in</strong>tance<br />

with <strong>the</strong> works of <strong>the</strong> classical writers and <strong>the</strong> native<br />

some way or o<strong>the</strong>r we are <strong>in</strong>debted for new <strong>in</strong>formation concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> geography and topography of ancient Assyria<br />

and Babylonia at <strong>the</strong> very time when Rich himself was carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on his <strong>in</strong>vestigations, <strong>the</strong> two follow<strong>in</strong>g deserve our<br />

It was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1816, when, on his way to India, after<br />

a long and adventurous journey from Egypt through Palest<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

Syria, and <strong>the</strong> adjacent districts east ot <strong>the</strong> Jordan,<br />

Buck<strong>in</strong>gham had arrived at Aleppo. Soon afterwards he<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> caravan of a rich Moslem merchant, with whom<br />

by way of Urfa and Mard<strong>in</strong> he travelled to Mosul, " adopt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> dress, manners, and language of <strong>the</strong> country " for <strong>the</strong><br />

sake of greater safety and convenience. A few days before<br />

<strong>the</strong> caravan reached <strong>the</strong> Tigris, it was overtaken by two<br />

Turkish Tartars <strong>in</strong><br />

charge of papers from <strong>the</strong> British ambasand<br />
