Abu Habba, as was well known to <strong>the</strong><br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, proved an especially rich and<br />

almost <strong>in</strong>exhaustible m<strong>in</strong>e for <strong>the</strong> illegal traffic. It was<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore decided to apply <strong>the</strong> imperial fund to a renewed<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of Sippar, especially as brief but<br />

successful excavations had been conducted <strong>the</strong>re<br />

previously<br />

(1889) by <strong>the</strong> Civil Cab<strong>in</strong>et under <strong>the</strong> control of <strong>the</strong> governor<br />

of Baghdad. 1<br />

The carry<strong>in</strong>g out of this scientific project<br />

was entrusted to Fa<strong>the</strong>r Scheil, a young and energetic<br />

French Assyriologist, who had rendered valuable services<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Stambul museum <strong>in</strong><br />

connection with <strong>the</strong> organization<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Egyptian and Babylonian sections, and to Bedry Bey,<br />

a well-known Turkish commissioner, who had ga<strong>in</strong>ed no<br />

small experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trenches of Tello and Nuffar. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of 1894 this Ottoman commission reached <strong>the</strong><br />

place of its dest<strong>in</strong>ation. Strongly supported by <strong>the</strong> officials<br />

of <strong>the</strong> vilayet, and conf<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir work chiefly to a search<br />

for <strong>in</strong>scribed monuments, <strong>the</strong> two men were able to execute<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir task satisfactorily <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> brief space of two months, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> end of which <strong>the</strong>ir limited means were exhausted. No<br />

complete report of <strong>the</strong>se excavations hav<strong>in</strong>g yet appeared,<br />

we can only sketch <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal results obta<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong><br />

basis of Scheil's notes published <strong>in</strong> Maspero's journal, 2 and<br />

Most of <strong>the</strong> antiquities discovered were lost to <strong>the</strong> museum <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> few which were sent are <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g archaic stone<br />

fragment published <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hilprecht</strong>, " Old Babylonian Inscriptions, chiefly from<br />

Nippur," part 1, Philadelphia, 1893,<br />
