place of worship for <strong>the</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It preserved this character<br />

for over 3000 years, until Babylonia's <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />

was lost, and ano<strong>the</strong>r people with ano<strong>the</strong>r religion, which did<br />

not know of <strong>the</strong> ancient gods of <strong>the</strong> country, established<br />

itself for a few centuries on <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>ed site of Bel's venerable<br />

city.<br />

Notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> almost cont<strong>in</strong>uous occupation of <strong>the</strong><br />

city dur<strong>in</strong>g this long period of Babylonian history, n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

strata can be dist<strong>in</strong>guished more or less accurately <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

temple court. Six of <strong>the</strong>se do not offer any difficulty at<br />

all, as <strong>the</strong>y are separated from each o<strong>the</strong>r by brick pavements<br />

(pp. 376, seqq.y 475, seq.). The o<strong>the</strong>r three overlap<br />

<strong>the</strong> next lower ones to a certa<strong>in</strong> degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> excavated<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>ast section of <strong>the</strong> sacred enclosure, but are recognized<br />

more clearly <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s. The debris represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>se different strata, with <strong>the</strong>ir nearly 3500 years<br />

of history (from about 3800 to 350<br />

b. a), and <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> pavement of Naram-S<strong>in</strong>, measures only 17 to 19 feet <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> temple court. As we saw above (p. 391), this comparatively<br />

small accumulation of rubbish with<strong>in</strong> such a long<br />

period f<strong>in</strong>ds its natural explanation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> double fact that<br />

a considerable part of <strong>the</strong> court <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> stage-tower<br />

and temple must always have been unoccupied (p. 376),<br />

and that everv ruler who laid a new pavement necessarily<br />

razed <strong>the</strong> crumbl<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs of his predecessors around<br />

<strong>the</strong> ziggurrat, <strong>in</strong> order to secure an even surface (p. 388)<br />

and a solid foundation for his own constructions.<br />

The six periods easily determ<strong>in</strong>ed by fragmentary pavements<br />

of baked or unbaked brick <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple court are<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g : 1. Sargon and Naram-S<strong>in</strong>, about 3750<br />

b. c.<br />
