3 Wells and<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>s are <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

constructions tor which<br />

<strong>the</strong>se baked bricks were<br />

required. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> results furnished<br />

bv our excavations, <strong>the</strong><br />

bricks are<br />

generally laid<br />

<strong>in</strong> a peculiar manner <strong>in</strong><br />

those ancient wells. The<br />

architects call it herr<strong>in</strong>gbone<br />

<strong>the</strong> accompany<strong>in</strong>g cut are especially <strong>in</strong>dicative<br />

of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple followed by <strong>the</strong> first builders<br />

<strong>in</strong> " <strong>the</strong> land of Sh<strong>in</strong>ar." It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to observe<br />

that <strong>the</strong> sign used <strong>in</strong> Babylonian writ<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

J " brick " orig<strong>in</strong>ally represents a section of such<br />

a well <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> bricks are laid <strong>in</strong> herr<strong>in</strong>g-bone fashion.<br />

The Sumerian stratum extend<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> virg<strong>in</strong> soil to a<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t about five to ten feet above <strong>the</strong> ancient pla<strong>in</strong> level is<br />

The fibre and form of <strong>the</strong> Feaf are clearly recognized on a number of<br />

bricks now <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> archaeological museum of <strong>the</strong> U. of Pa.<br />
