large quantity of baked terra-cotta balls, about i<br />

% to i y z<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches <strong>in</strong> diameter, and a few small stone eggs. Both balls<br />

and eggs had previously been classified under <strong>the</strong> general<br />

title of playth<strong>in</strong>gs, but <strong>in</strong> view of <strong>the</strong> peculiar place where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y mostly occurred, this explanation can no longer be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

There is little doubt <strong>in</strong> my m<strong>in</strong>d but that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

to be regarded as missiles thrown by <strong>the</strong> sl<strong>in</strong>gers of hostile<br />

armies attack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> city. As stones could not be obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> alluvial soil of Babylonia, clay was turned <strong>in</strong>to war<br />

material as it served many o<strong>the</strong>r purposes. The marble eggs<br />

may have orig<strong>in</strong>ally belonged to foreign <strong>in</strong>vaders, notably<br />

<strong>the</strong> Elamites, who brought <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong>ir mounta<strong>in</strong>ous<br />

districts, or <strong>the</strong>y were thrown by certa<strong>in</strong><br />

Babylonian warriors<br />

of one of <strong>the</strong> petty states near <strong>the</strong> Arabian desert who could<br />

afford this luxury. 1 The o<strong>the</strong>r weapons employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

battles around <strong>the</strong> walls of <strong>the</strong> temple, accord<strong>in</strong>g to our discoveries,<br />

were arrows, spears, axes and clubs, <strong>the</strong> heads of<br />

<strong>the</strong> first-mentioned three weapons be<strong>in</strong>g made of copper;<br />

those of <strong>the</strong> clubs of stone, especially porphyry and granite.<br />

In one case we came upon <strong>the</strong> twisted rema<strong>in</strong>s of a quiver.<br />

The wooden parts of <strong>the</strong> receptacle had decayed long ago,<br />

but its copper fasten<strong>in</strong>gs, consist<strong>in</strong>g of a round, th<strong>in</strong> plate<br />

with two corroded arrowheads attached to it, a narrow copper<br />

strap and a nail of <strong>the</strong> same metal, were still preserved.<br />

The excavations trac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> base of Nimit-Marduk revealed<br />

also some of <strong>the</strong> means to which <strong>the</strong> besieged <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

sometimes resorted <strong>in</strong> order to protect <strong>the</strong>mselves aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

attacks from without. In case of necessity <strong>the</strong>y seized any<br />

heavy object upon which <strong>the</strong>y could lay <strong>the</strong>ir hands, and<br />

hurled it down upon <strong>the</strong> heads of <strong>the</strong> storm<strong>in</strong>g enemies, as<br />

was shown bv <strong>the</strong> stone weights, mortars <strong>in</strong> dolerite, broken<br />

statues and reliefs, stone pestles, etc., unear<strong>the</strong>d along <strong>the</strong><br />

outer face of <strong>the</strong> wall. We here found some of <strong>the</strong> oldest<br />

fragments of sculptures discovered at Nuffar, e. g., several<br />
