DURING 19 CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 481<br />

merit, <strong>in</strong>scribed with two columns of old-Babylonian writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(twenty-five l<strong>in</strong>es each), and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Semitic dialect of <strong>the</strong><br />

country, conveys to us <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation that Samsu-iluna,<br />

son and successor of Hammurabi, restored <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner wall<br />

of Nippur {duru). We <strong>the</strong>reby obta<strong>in</strong> new evidence that<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> first dynasty did not entirely neglect Bel's<br />

sanctuary, though <strong>the</strong>ir apparent reason for fortify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

temple was less religious than political. Their <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wall of Nippur seems to be closely connected with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

operations aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> city of (N)is<strong>in</strong>, which was situated<br />

not far from <strong>the</strong> latter, 1<br />

and which subsequently became <strong>the</strong><br />

stronghold of Rim-S<strong>in</strong> of Larsa.<br />

translation. " Samsu-iluna, <strong>the</strong> powerful k<strong>in</strong>g, k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Babylon, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> four quarters of <strong>the</strong> world. When<br />

Bel had granted him to rule <strong>the</strong> four quarters of <strong>the</strong><br />

world and placed <strong>the</strong>ir re<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>to his hand, Samsu-iluna,<br />

<strong>the</strong> shepherd who gladdens <strong>the</strong> heart of Marduk, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sublime power which <strong>the</strong> great gods had given him,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wisdom of Ea ... he raised <strong>the</strong> wall {duru) of<br />

Bel, which structure his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r [S<strong>in</strong>muballit] had<br />

made higher than before, like a great mounta<strong>in</strong>, surrounded<br />

it with marshy ground (apparaw), dug ' <strong>the</strong> Euphrates of<br />

Nippur [/'.
