DURING W'B CENTURY : ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 479<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed noth<strong>in</strong>g else to be done but to try to solve <strong>the</strong><br />

problem <strong>in</strong> connection with our excavations along <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

enclos<strong>in</strong>g wall of <strong>the</strong> court of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat as far as<br />

this was possible. The attempt was crowned with a fair<br />

amount of success beyond that which could have been anticipated<br />

(comp. <strong>the</strong> z<strong>in</strong>ctype, p. 470).<br />

While trac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> panelled outer face of <strong>the</strong> last-mentioned<br />

wall, our workmen were suddenly stopped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

progress both at <strong>the</strong> eastern and<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn ends of <strong>the</strong> long<br />

and deep trench by a cross-wall jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> former at a<br />

right angle. In order to ascerta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course and nature<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se two walls <strong>the</strong>y were ordered to follow <strong>the</strong>m for a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> distance by means of tunnels cut along <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>ner<br />

faces at about <strong>the</strong> level of Naram-S<strong>in</strong>'s pavement. These<br />

tunnels revealed <strong>the</strong> existence of numerous ash-graves <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> lower strata, and enabled us to determ<strong>in</strong>e that <strong>the</strong><br />

two walls were constructed of <strong>the</strong> same unbaked material<br />

and adorned with <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of panels as <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

wall of <strong>the</strong> temple enclosure. The nor<strong>the</strong>ast wall was<br />

traced forty-eight feet without reach<strong>in</strong>g its end, when <strong>the</strong><br />

excavations were suspended <strong>in</strong> order not to destroy valuable<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s of constructions which might have been built<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st it. For <strong>the</strong> same reason <strong>the</strong> southwest tunnel was<br />

cut less deep, especially as <strong>the</strong> evidence ga<strong>in</strong>ed from it<br />

sufficed to confirm <strong>the</strong> results obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

tunnel. It could no longer be doubted that a second,<br />

somewhat smaller court, <strong>in</strong> which Bur-S<strong>in</strong>'s sanctuary stood,<br />

adjo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> court of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat on <strong>the</strong> side of its<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

entrance. This outer court seems to have extended to<br />

<strong>the</strong> edge of <strong>the</strong> depression which represents <strong>the</strong> ancient bed<br />

of a branch of <strong>the</strong> Shatt en-Nil. An open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> low<br />

narrow ridge runn<strong>in</strong>g along its nor<strong>the</strong>rn embankment, and<br />

evidently mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s of an ancient wall later occupied<br />

by Parthian houses, <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong> site of <strong>the</strong> gate which<br />

once gave access to it.<br />
