below <strong>the</strong> level of Naram-S<strong>in</strong>. With regard to several<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r antiquities found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strata immediately beneath<br />

it — as, e.g., a quantity of large beads <strong>in</strong> crystal (quartz),<br />

a hollow cone of silver, a vase of jewelry conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and a well preserved cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same metal, several excellently<br />

fashioned nails, scrapers, knives, a saw, and many<br />

fragments of vessels, all <strong>in</strong> copper — it must rema<strong>in</strong> doubtful<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y belonged to "<strong>the</strong> house of Bel" or, as<br />

seems more probable to <strong>the</strong> present writer, <strong>in</strong> part at<br />

least were orig<strong>in</strong>ally deposited <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> numerous ash-graves<br />

which beg<strong>in</strong> to appear directly below <strong>the</strong> pavement of <strong>the</strong><br />

Sargon dvnastv.<br />

Several fragments of small pavements were discovered<br />

slightly above that of Naram-S<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east section of <strong>the</strong><br />

temple court immediately before <strong>the</strong> sanctuary of Bel.
