"<strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g presents of Bau " were deposited. Here,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, for <strong>the</strong> first time, we meet with <strong>the</strong> idea that a Babylonian<br />

god has his tomb. Startl<strong>in</strong>g as this statement may<br />

seem at first, it is <strong>in</strong> entire accord with <strong>the</strong> character of <strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipal god of Lagash, as a god of vegetation and as a sungod.<br />

For N<strong>in</strong>girsu, " <strong>the</strong> powerful champion" and "<strong>the</strong><br />

beloved son " of En-lil of Nippur, 1 orig<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>the</strong> god<br />

of agriculture, was later identified with N<strong>in</strong>ib, " <strong>the</strong><br />

son of<br />

Ekur" <strong>the</strong> god of <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g sun, " who holds <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k of<br />

heaven and earth 2 and governs everyth<strong>in</strong>g." Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Babylonian conception, he suffers death <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

way as Tammuz 4 (Ez. 8 :<br />

14), <strong>the</strong> god of <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g vegetation<br />

and of <strong>the</strong> lower regions, with whom N<strong>in</strong>girsu is<br />

practicallv identical; 5 or as Shamash, <strong>the</strong> sun-god himself,<br />

who descends <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> apsu, <strong>the</strong> terrestrial and subterranean<br />

ocean, every even<strong>in</strong>g, and rises out of it aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

; who <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of every year commences his course<br />

with youthful vigor, but gradually grows weaker and weaker<br />

until he dies dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter. The sun dwell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> " <strong>the</strong><br />

ne<strong>the</strong>r world " for half a year, <strong>the</strong> sun-god himself naturally<br />

is<br />

considered as dead dur<strong>in</strong>g this period/' and Shamash consequently<br />

has his tomb <strong>in</strong> Larsa, and Ai, his wife, at Sippara,<br />

7 as N<strong>in</strong>girsu <strong>in</strong> Lagash. More than this, <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat<br />
