DURING W<strong>in</strong> CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 461<br />

cones from Babylonian tombs. The curious form of <strong>the</strong><br />

document attracted my immediate attention. On closer<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation, it proved to be a build<strong>in</strong>g record of twentyfive<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es of neo-Babvlonian<br />

cuneiform characters <strong>in</strong>scribed<br />

Truncated Cone conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Ashurbanapal's Account of his Restoration of <strong>the</strong> Stage-Tower<br />

of Nippur.<br />

lengthwise by " Ashurbanapal, k<strong>in</strong>g of Assyria." Only l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

i<br />

5-1 9 of <strong>the</strong> mutilated legend are of importance for <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

Nabopolassar's f<strong>in</strong>e cyl<strong>in</strong>der, now <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia, and conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g his build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

record of Etemenanki, "<strong>the</strong> tower of Babel" (comp. <strong>Hilprecht</strong>, "The<br />

Bab. Exp. of <strong>the</strong> U. of Pa.," series A, vol. i, part 1, pi. xiii). A "cyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />

" from NufFar conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Samsu-iluna's account of his restoration of <strong>the</strong><br />

duru (<strong>in</strong>ner wall) of <strong>the</strong> temple of Bel, and a cone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Louvre of Paris,<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Hammurabi's record of his construction " of <strong>the</strong> wall and canal<br />

of Sippara " (accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>formation received by letter from Thureau-Dang<strong>in</strong>),<br />

also show <strong>the</strong> same form. It doubtless represents <strong>the</strong> prototype of <strong>the</strong><br />

later barrel-cyl<strong>in</strong>der. Never<strong>the</strong>less, it rema<strong>in</strong>s a most remarkable fact that<br />

cyl<strong>in</strong>ders of this peculiar form were deposited both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ziggurrats and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

enclos<strong>in</strong>g walls, and also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient tombs which, as we now know, orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

surrounded <strong>the</strong> former.
