Imperfect as <strong>the</strong> report of Beauchamp must appear <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> light of our present knowledge, at <strong>the</strong> time when it was<br />

written it conveyed to <strong>the</strong> public for <strong>the</strong> first time a tolerably<br />

clear idea of <strong>the</strong> exact position and enormous size of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of Babylon and of <strong>the</strong> great possibilities connected<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir future excavation. It was particularly <strong>in</strong> England<br />

that people began to realize <strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong>se cyl<strong>in</strong>ders<br />

and bricks covered with cuneiform writ<strong>in</strong>g " resembl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions of Persepolis mentioned by Chard<strong>in</strong>."<br />

East India Company of London became <strong>the</strong> first<br />

public exponent<br />

of this rapidly grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />

Great Brita<strong>in</strong>, by<br />

order<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir Resident at Basra to obta<strong>in</strong> several specimens<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se remarkable bricks and to send <strong>the</strong>m carefully packed<br />

to London. At <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth <strong>century</strong> a<br />

small case of Babylonian antiquities arrived, <strong>the</strong> first of a<br />

long series to follow years later. Insignificant as it was, it<br />

soon played an important role <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

character of <strong>the</strong> third<br />

system of writ<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions.<br />

There were o<strong>the</strong>r travellers at <strong>the</strong> close of <strong>the</strong> eighteenth<br />

<strong>century</strong>, who, like Edw. Ives 2 and <strong>the</strong> French physician<br />

G. A. Olivier, 3 also visited <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of N<strong>in</strong>eveh and Babylon,<br />

occasionally even contribut<strong>in</strong>g a few details to our<br />

previous knowledge. But <strong>the</strong>y did not alter <strong>the</strong> general<br />

conception derived from <strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong>ir predecessors,<br />

especially Niebuhr and Beauchamp. The first period of<br />
