DURING 19 CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 443<br />

temple library, could not be determ<strong>in</strong>ed, as proper descriptions<br />

were lack<strong>in</strong>g and no attempt was made to reproduce<br />

a few l<strong>in</strong>es of some of <strong>the</strong> better-preserved documents.<br />

It was very evident that, above all, <strong>the</strong> assistance of an<br />

experienced archaeologist and Assyriologist was required<br />

Nuffar to decipher tablets, to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> characteristic<br />

features of strata, to fix <strong>the</strong> approximate age of walls and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r antiquities, to ascerta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir probable purpose and<br />

use, to lay trenches for o<strong>the</strong>r reasons than to f<strong>in</strong>d tablets,<br />

and to ga<strong>the</strong>r all <strong>the</strong> loose threads toge<strong>the</strong>r and to endeavor<br />

to reconstruct some k<strong>in</strong>d of a picture of <strong>the</strong> ancient city on<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis of his exam<strong>in</strong>ation and studies. The architects did<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir very best to assist Haynes and to promote <strong>the</strong> cause<br />

of <strong>the</strong> expedition.<br />

But entirely unfamiliar with Babylonian<br />

archaeology as <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>n were, and for <strong>the</strong> first time confronted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> complicated problems of a Babylonian ru<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y needed technical advice as to how to overcome <strong>the</strong> difficulties.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g left entirely to <strong>the</strong>ir own resources, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

decided to undertake what <strong>the</strong>y were able to do under <strong>the</strong><br />

circumstances. They sketched dra<strong>in</strong>s, tombs, vases and<br />

various o<strong>the</strong>r antiquities to illustrate Haynes' weekly reports<br />

; <strong>the</strong>y tried to make <strong>the</strong>mselves acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong><br />

As we saw above (pp. 371, seq.\ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> third<br />

campaign, Haynes had discovered <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

approach to <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat, <strong>in</strong>dicated by two almost parallel<br />

walls, extend<strong>in</strong>g nearly at a right angle far <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> court<br />

from <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern face of <strong>the</strong> stage-tower. It had<br />

appeared, <strong>the</strong>refore, most natural to <strong>the</strong> present writer to<br />

assume that <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal gate or entrance to <strong>the</strong> temple<br />

court must lie <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> enclos<strong>in</strong>g wall somewhere opposite<br />

that approach. In 1897, when I first had occasion to
