438 EXPLORATIONS IN BIBLE LANDS<br />

great movement and expectation has taken possession of <strong>the</strong><br />

tribes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior, partly brought about <strong>in</strong> consequence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> acquisition and cultivation of large tracts of land along<br />

<strong>the</strong> canals for <strong>the</strong> Sultan, and partly <strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong> various<br />

scientific missions from Europe and America. Through<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cont<strong>in</strong>ued exploration of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>the</strong>se foreign excavators<br />

have <strong>in</strong>troduced new ideas <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> country, made <strong>the</strong><br />

people acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with important <strong>in</strong>ventions, and, above<br />

all, taught <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> value of time and work, thus prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> way for <strong>the</strong> planned German railroad, of which even <strong>the</strong><br />

'Afej speak with great anticipation, and which surely will<br />

play <strong>the</strong> chief missionary role throughout <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

When, after a long absence, I stood aga<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> airy top<br />

of B<strong>in</strong>t el-Amir, as far as my eye could scan <strong>the</strong> horizon I<br />

saw noth<strong>in</strong>g but immense flocks of sheep and goats, donkeys<br />

and cows and buffaloes pastured by cheerful boys and<br />

men, Arab villages and encampments scattered over <strong>the</strong><br />

pla<strong>in</strong>, and small green patches of cultivated ground on <strong>the</strong><br />

edges of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>undated districts;<br />

<strong>the</strong> camel herds and black<br />

tents of <strong>the</strong> Sa'id <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> distance, and far away beyond <strong>the</strong><br />

Tigris towards <strong>the</strong> east, only now and <strong>the</strong>n visible, <strong>the</strong> snowcapped<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s * of Luristan. At my first meet<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hamza shaikhs and <strong>the</strong>ir ret<strong>in</strong>ues, <strong>the</strong>y were somewhat<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>ted because <strong>the</strong>y did not recognize me.<br />

In order<br />

to establish my identity, <strong>the</strong>y submitted me to a cross-exam<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

<strong>in</strong>quir<strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r I remembered <strong>the</strong> burn<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

our camp. But scarcely had I begun to recount <strong>the</strong> details<br />

of <strong>the</strong> disaster, <strong>the</strong> destruction of my f<strong>in</strong>e horse, Marduk,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> fortunate escape of ano<strong>the</strong>r, Abu khams (" fa<strong>the</strong>r of<br />

five," namely, Turkish liras), as I had named it, with due<br />

regard to its low price — a joke thoroughly appreciated by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Arabs, — and to refer to <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal persons connected<br />

with <strong>the</strong> catastrophe, ask<strong>in</strong>g on my part for <strong>the</strong> ill-fated<br />

The Assyrian word for "east" is shadu, "mounta<strong>in</strong>," as <strong>the</strong> Hebrew<br />

one for " west " is yam, " ocean."
