fifteen feet below Naram-S<strong>in</strong>'s pavement, or ten feet below<br />

<strong>the</strong> base of <strong>the</strong> curb, which it probably antedates by a <strong>century</strong><br />

or two. We may safely assign it, <strong>the</strong>refore, to <strong>the</strong><br />

end of <strong>the</strong> fifth pre-Christian millennium. It presented a<br />

number of <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g peculiarities. Be<strong>in</strong>g 1 feet i <strong>in</strong>ch<br />

high (<strong>in</strong>side measurement), and hav<strong>in</strong>g a span of i foot 8<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches and a rise of i foot i <strong>in</strong>ch, it was constructed of well<br />

baked plano-convex bricks laid<br />

on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of radiat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

voussoirs. These bricks measured 12 by 6 by iy 2 <strong>in</strong>ches,<br />

were light yellow <strong>in</strong> color, and bore certa<strong>in</strong> marks on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

upper or convex surface, which had been made ei<strong>the</strong>r by<br />

press<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> thumb and <strong>in</strong>dex f<strong>in</strong>ger deeply <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> clay<br />

<strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> brick, or bv draw<strong>in</strong>g one or more f<strong>in</strong>gers<br />

lengthwise over it. Primitive as <strong>the</strong>y doubtless are, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

do not (as Haynes <strong>in</strong>ferred) " represent <strong>the</strong> earliest type<br />

of bricks found at Nippur or elsewhere <strong>in</strong> Babylonia," —<br />

which are ra<strong>the</strong>r smaller and sometimes a little thicker,<br />

though for a considerable while both k<strong>in</strong>ds were used alongside<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r and often <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same build<strong>in</strong>g. 1 The curve<br />

of <strong>the</strong> arch was effected " by wedge-shaped jo<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong><br />

simple clay mortar used to cement <strong>the</strong> bricks." " On <strong>the</strong><br />

top of its crown was a crushed terra-cotta pipe about 3 or<br />

2}4 <strong>in</strong>ches <strong>in</strong> diameter," <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g of which Haynes declares<br />

unknown. I cannot help th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that it served a<br />

purpose similar to <strong>the</strong> holes provided at regular <strong>in</strong>tervals<br />

<strong>in</strong> our modern cas<strong>in</strong>g walls of terraces, etc. ; <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> pipe was <strong>in</strong>tended to give exit to <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> water<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

Thus, e. g., <strong>in</strong> a dra<strong>in</strong> discovered by <strong>the</strong> fourth expedition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east section<br />

of <strong>the</strong> temple court at <strong>the</strong> lowest level of any of <strong>the</strong> baked brick constructions<br />

hi<strong>the</strong>rto excavated at NufFar. It conta<strong>in</strong>ed bricks of <strong>the</strong> size I 2 by 5 7/fc<br />

by 2^ <strong>in</strong>ches, and o<strong>the</strong>rs measur<strong>in</strong>g only 8^ by 4^3 by 2 <strong>in</strong>ches, while at<br />

<strong>the</strong> foundation of <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast city gate of Nippur <strong>the</strong> two k<strong>in</strong>ds of bricks<br />

marked two pre-Sargonic periods succeed<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r precisely as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

two lowest build<strong>in</strong>gs of Mound B at Tello (comp. p. 241, above). Comp.<br />

also p. 251, above. He who built <strong>the</strong> dra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> part doubtless used older<br />

material.
