crude bricks" (on an average 16 <strong>in</strong>ches square and 3^2<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches thick), made of " tenacious clay thoroughly mixed<br />

with f<strong>in</strong>ely cut straw and well kneaded." They are "of<br />

good mould, and <strong>in</strong> proportions, size, and texture closely<br />

resemble <strong>the</strong> stamped crude bricks of Naram-S<strong>in</strong>." Though<br />

Haynes devoted much time to <strong>the</strong>ir identification, he could<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>e nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> design of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g nor " <strong>the</strong> era<br />

of its construction." Yet he felt sure that it was " <strong>the</strong> lowest<br />

and most ancient edifice "<br />

thus far discovered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple<br />

enclosure of Nippur, and that its bricks are "<strong>the</strong> prototype<br />

of those of Naram-S<strong>in</strong>, which <strong>the</strong>y doubtless preceded by at<br />

least several centuries." To my regret, I must differ aga<strong>in</strong><br />

with <strong>the</strong>se conclusions after hav<strong>in</strong>g studied <strong>the</strong> history of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ziggurrat <strong>in</strong> connection with a second personal visit to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> 1900.<br />

While exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>gs of this <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g edifice,<br />

Haynes came first upon <strong>the</strong> same gray or black ashes<br />

as are found everywhere <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> court of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat immediately<br />

below Naram-S<strong>in</strong>'s pavement, next upon " lumps of<br />

kneaded clay," <strong>the</strong>n upon several stray bits<br />

of lime mortar.<br />

All <strong>the</strong>se traces of human activity were imbedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

debris characteristic of <strong>the</strong> lower strata, which largely consist<br />

of earth, ashes, and <strong>in</strong>numerable potsherds. When he<br />

had reached a depth of n<strong>in</strong>e feet from <strong>the</strong><br />

top<br />

of <strong>the</strong> solid structure, — <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words,<br />

bottom of <strong>the</strong> ancient curb on <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

side of <strong>the</strong> stage-tower, — he found a large<br />

<strong>the</strong> reports before me offer no satisfactory<br />

clue as to <strong>the</strong>ir precise use, <strong>the</strong>re can be little doubt that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y belong to <strong>the</strong> real pre-Sargonic period. I will try to<br />
