of Kadashman-Turgu's and Ashurbanapal's material by<br />

Seleucido-Parthian pr<strong>in</strong>ces, who selected<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

this peculiar place<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> coolest water possible and to secure<br />

its supply for <strong>the</strong> highest part of <strong>the</strong>ir castle, even <strong>in</strong> case<br />

<strong>the</strong> lower palace should have been taken by an enemy.<br />

A word rema<strong>in</strong>s to be said about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior and <strong>the</strong><br />

upper stages of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat. The large body of <strong>the</strong> hightower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g consisted of crude bricks n<strong>in</strong>e by six by<br />

three <strong>in</strong>ches <strong>in</strong> size. They represent <strong>the</strong> standard dimension<br />

of Ur-Gur's material, but <strong>the</strong>y were already <strong>in</strong> use<br />

before his time. For bricks of <strong>the</strong> same size and form, but<br />

different <strong>in</strong> color (<strong>the</strong> latter be<strong>in</strong>g yellowish, <strong>the</strong> former<br />

gray), were discovered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower courses of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat. 1<br />

Apart from <strong>the</strong> unusually large adobes<br />

employed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Parthian builders and completely cover<strong>in</strong>g and embedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> ancient stage-tower, <strong>the</strong>re is only one o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

crude bricks traceable <strong>in</strong> its upper part, which may belong<br />

to one of <strong>the</strong> Cassite rulers or to Ashurbanapal.<br />

This fact<br />

will scarcely surprise us, s<strong>in</strong>ce little is left of <strong>the</strong> higher<br />

stages of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat. We can state with certa<strong>in</strong>ty only<br />

that Haynes found considerable rema<strong>in</strong>s of a slop<strong>in</strong>g second<br />

terrace, largely ru<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre of its southwest and<br />

nor<strong>the</strong>ast facades, where apparently water conduits, similar<br />

to those of <strong>the</strong> first story, previously existed, and that he<br />

believes himself to have discovered fa<strong>in</strong>t traces of a third<br />

storv. The amount of rubbish accumulated on <strong>the</strong> top of<br />

<strong>the</strong> second stage is comparatively small. But this circumstance<br />

does not constitute an argument aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> assumption<br />

of more than three stages. It only testifies to <strong>the</strong> rapid<br />

dis<strong>in</strong>tegration of crude bricks after <strong>the</strong>y had been exposed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ed action of heavy ra<strong>in</strong>s and extraord<strong>in</strong>ary heat,<br />

and to <strong>the</strong> remarkable changes which <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat under-<br />

vaults open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> pavements of Ur-Gur and Naram-S<strong>in</strong>.
