DURING <strong>19th</strong> CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 365<br />

enough to treat it with special reverence and to exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />

it with <strong>the</strong> greatest care. In consequence of his strange<br />

procedure he could not help destroy<strong>in</strong>g essential details<br />

of all <strong>the</strong> different strata which later were miss<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same time to report o<strong>the</strong>r discoveries <strong>in</strong>accurately and<br />

<strong>in</strong>coherently. It became, <strong>the</strong>refore, exceed<strong>in</strong>gly difficult,<br />

and <strong>in</strong> many cases impossible, for me to determ<strong>in</strong>e and to<br />

arrange <strong>the</strong> defective results of all <strong>the</strong>se perpendicular cutt<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir eight to ten different strata, <strong>in</strong> a satisfactory<br />

manner, <strong>the</strong> more so as <strong>the</strong>y often had been obta<strong>in</strong>ed at<br />

long <strong>in</strong>tervals, and as a rule were unaccompanied by even<br />

<strong>the</strong> poorest k<strong>in</strong>d of sketch or ground plan, while <strong>the</strong> portable<br />

antiquities had never been numbered to allow of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

identification with certa<strong>in</strong>ty afterwards.<br />

In spite of <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>ly un-Babylonian character of <strong>the</strong><br />

large crude bricks which constitute <strong>the</strong> bulk of <strong>the</strong> latest<br />

fortified walls around <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat, Haynes regarded<br />

<strong>the</strong>m<br />

with Peters as <strong>the</strong> work of Ur-Gur, differ<strong>in</strong>g, however,<br />

from him <strong>in</strong> one important po<strong>in</strong>t, by declar<strong>in</strong>g at least a<br />

large<br />

part of <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast enclos<strong>in</strong>g wall as <strong>the</strong> work " of<br />

<strong>the</strong> first rebuilder of <strong>the</strong> ziggurrat <strong>in</strong> cruciform style [about<br />

600 b. c.]." He removed a number of rooms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east<br />

corner of this settlement, and as Meyer fortunately was<br />

on <strong>the</strong> ground a few months later, we have a well executed<br />

plan of <strong>the</strong>se chambers <strong>in</strong> addition to a few sketches and a<br />

general description of <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>in</strong>cipal features and contents<br />

by Haynes. The two explorers came to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

conclusion, confirmed<br />

later by my <strong>in</strong>spection of <strong>the</strong> few rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir trenches, that three different periods are clearly<br />

to be dist<strong>in</strong>guished with regard to <strong>the</strong>ir occupancy. They<br />

also make us acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with<br />

<strong>the</strong> exact dimensions of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

rooms and <strong>the</strong>ir mutual relation to each o<strong>the</strong>r, with <strong>the</strong><br />

average thickness and height of <strong>the</strong>ir ru<strong>in</strong>ed walls, with certa<strong>in</strong><br />

important details of <strong>the</strong>ir doors, with <strong>the</strong>ir dra<strong>in</strong>age and ventilation<br />

and several fireplaces discovered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
