DURING 19'" CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 11<br />

crim<strong>in</strong>ates between <strong>the</strong> statement of <strong>the</strong> Arabian geographer<br />

Abulfeda, claim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eastern bank of <strong>the</strong> Tigris for <strong>the</strong><br />

true site of N<strong>in</strong>eveh, and a tradition current among <strong>the</strong><br />

natives, 1 who identify Eski- Mosul, a ru<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> western<br />

side and considerably higher up <strong>the</strong> river, with <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

city, himself favor<strong>in</strong>g, however, <strong>the</strong> former view. For,<br />

"opposite Mosul <strong>the</strong>re is a place called Tell Et-tuba, i. e. y<br />

Mound of Repentance,' where, <strong>the</strong>y say, <strong>the</strong> N<strong>in</strong>evites<br />

put on sackcloth and ashes to turn away <strong>the</strong> wrath of God."<br />

The old tradition which placed <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong> of N<strong>in</strong>eveh<br />

opposite Mosul was v<strong>in</strong>dicated anew by <strong>the</strong> Danish scholar<br />

Carsten Niebuhr, who visited <strong>the</strong> place <strong>in</strong> 1766. Though<br />

not attempt<strong>in</strong>g to give a detailed description of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

which we are chiefly <strong>in</strong>terested, he states his own personal<br />

conviction very decidedly, and adds some new and important<br />

facts illustrated by <strong>the</strong> first sketch of <strong>the</strong> large sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

mound of Nebi Yunus. 2<br />

Jewish and Christian <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

alike declare that N<strong>in</strong>eveh stood on <strong>the</strong> left bank of <strong>the</strong><br />

river, and <strong>the</strong>y differ only as to <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al extent of <strong>the</strong><br />

city.<br />

Two pr<strong>in</strong>cipal hills are to be dist<strong>in</strong>guished, <strong>the</strong> former<br />

crowned with <strong>the</strong> village of Nunia (/. e., N<strong>in</strong>eveh) and a<br />

mosque said to conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tomb of <strong>the</strong> prophet Jonah<br />

(Nebi Yunus), <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r known by <strong>the</strong> name of Qal'at<br />

Nunia (" <strong>the</strong> castle of N<strong>in</strong>eveh "), and occupied by <strong>the</strong> village<br />

of Qoyunjuk. While liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Mosul near <strong>the</strong> Tigris,<br />

he was also shown <strong>the</strong> ancient walls of <strong>the</strong> city on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Also reported (and favored) by <strong>the</strong> Italian Academician and botanist<br />

Sest<strong>in</strong>i, who <strong>in</strong> 1781 travelled from Constant<strong>in</strong>ople through Asia M<strong>in</strong>or to<br />

Mosul and Basra, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year from <strong>the</strong>re via Mosul and Aleppo<br />

to Alexandria. Comp. <strong>the</strong> French translation of his account, Voyage de Constant<strong>in</strong>ople<br />
