bricks, eleven <strong>in</strong>ches square and four <strong>in</strong>ches thick, occur.<br />

They are f<strong>in</strong>ely modelled bricks, and are firm and solid, as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are taken from <strong>the</strong>ir walls. They are <strong>the</strong> prettiest<br />

crude bricks I have anywhere seen." But we look <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong><br />

for an attempt to describe <strong>the</strong>se remarkable walls, to trace<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir course, to measure <strong>the</strong>ir dimensions, to draw <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ground plan, or to ascerta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ent features and orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

It was <strong>the</strong> depressive and enervat<strong>in</strong>g effect of <strong>the</strong> solitude<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Babylonian desert and marshes which began seriously<br />

to tell upon Haynes. The rapidly grow<strong>in</strong>g fear of constant<br />

danger from " greedy " and revengeful Arabs, which<br />

was <strong>the</strong> natural outcome of <strong>the</strong> former, took hold of him <strong>in</strong><br />

an alarm<strong>in</strong>g manner. " The great stra<strong>in</strong> of ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

never seen <strong>the</strong> time at<br />

viewed <strong>the</strong> conditions around Nuffar more calmly and <strong>in</strong><br />

a more objective light, for he did not hesitate for a moment<br />

to take his wife among <strong>the</strong> same Arabs. And it is a remarkable<br />

fact, deserv<strong>in</strong>g special notice, that <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> ten years<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong> expedition has owned its house (meftul)<br />

at <strong>the</strong> edge of <strong>the</strong> Babylonian swamps, no attempt has ever<br />

been made to open its door, to cut a hole <strong>in</strong>to its walls, or<br />

to steal its furniture and stores, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

occupied or left<br />

to <strong>the</strong> care of <strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g tribes.<br />

There can be no doubt that excavations carried on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>
