between <strong>the</strong> uppermost settlement and <strong>the</strong> floor of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> court of columns, while repeatedly <strong>the</strong> burial-shafts were<br />

cut through <strong>the</strong> walls of <strong>the</strong> rooms grouped around it.<br />

Hence<br />

it follows that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>terments must have taken place at a<br />

time when <strong>the</strong> impos<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>g was alreadv <strong>in</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s, — <strong>in</strong><br />

era, and term<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> sixth or seventh <strong>century</strong><br />

to have found evidence that <strong>the</strong> structure was a thousand<br />

years earlier. His work <strong>in</strong> and around this build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

may be sketched briefly as follows :<br />

The open court flanked by columns hav<strong>in</strong>g been excavated<br />

completely <strong>in</strong> 1889, Peters undertook next to search for <strong>the</strong><br />

rooms to which it probably gave light and access. As, <strong>in</strong><br />

ancient build<strong>in</strong>g had been washed away <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

along <strong>the</strong> edge of <strong>the</strong> court did not belong to subsequent<br />

burials, but were rema<strong>in</strong>s of palm beams which orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

established this <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g fact, would have spared no pa<strong>in</strong>s<br />

to exam<strong>in</strong>e a build<strong>in</strong>g systematically, which, as late as 1897,<br />

he described as " <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and ambitious structure<br />

excavated at Nippur next to <strong>the</strong> temple."<br />
