LURING 19TH CENTURY. ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 7<br />

and <strong>the</strong> restoration of <strong>the</strong>ir literature and art were achieved<br />

only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth <strong>century</strong>. The road was<br />

long, <strong>the</strong> process slow, and many persons and circumstances<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed to br<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al result.<br />

I<br />

THE REDISCOVERY OF NINEVEH AND BABYLON<br />

NINEVEH<br />

N<strong>in</strong>eveh, <strong>the</strong> capital of <strong>the</strong> Assyrian empire, owed its<br />

greatness and dom<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence exclusively to <strong>the</strong> conquer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

spirit of its<br />

rulers and <strong>the</strong> military glory and prowess<br />

of its armies. As soon as <strong>the</strong> latter had been routed,<br />

her <strong>in</strong>fluence ceased, <strong>the</strong> city fell, never to rise aga<strong>in</strong>, and<br />

its very site was quickly forgotten among <strong>the</strong> nations.<br />

When two hundred years later Xenophon and his ten thousand<br />

Greeks fought <strong>the</strong>ir way through <strong>the</strong> wilderness and<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> Black Sea, <strong>the</strong>y passed <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of N<strong>in</strong>eveh<br />

without even mention<strong>in</strong>g her by name. But a vague<br />

local<br />

tradition, always an important factor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> East, cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to l<strong>in</strong>ger around <strong>the</strong> desolate region between Mosul<br />

and <strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong> Upper Zab, where <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al drama<br />

had been enacted.<br />

Benjam<strong>in</strong> of Tudela, a learned Spanish Jew, who travelled<br />

to Palest<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>the</strong> districts of <strong>the</strong> Euphrates and<br />

Tigris <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> twelfth <strong>century</strong>, about <strong>the</strong> time when Rabbi<br />

Pethahiah of Ratisbon visited Mesopotamia, had no difficulty<br />

<strong>in</strong> locat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> actual position of N<strong>in</strong>eveh. In<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g of Mosul he savs :<br />

" This city, situated on <strong>the</strong><br />

Tigris, is connected with ancient N<strong>in</strong>eveh by a bridge. It<br />

is true, N<strong>in</strong>eveh lies now <strong>in</strong> utter ru<strong>in</strong>s, but numerous<br />

villages and small towns occupy its former space." 1<br />
