<strong>the</strong> surface." Wild animals, boars and hyenas, jackals and<br />

wolves, and an occasional lion, <strong>in</strong>fest <strong>the</strong> jungles. Here<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re a small plot of ground, a shallow island, a hightower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>, bare of every sign of vegetation, ana towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> north large elevated tracts of barren soil covered with<br />

fragments of brick and glass and stone appear above <strong>the</strong><br />

horizon of <strong>the</strong>se pestiferous marshes. Half-naked men,<br />

women, and children, almost black from constant exposure<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sun, <strong>in</strong>habit <strong>the</strong>se desolate regions. Filthy huts of<br />

reeds and mats are <strong>the</strong>ir abodes dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> night ; <strong>in</strong> long<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted boats of <strong>the</strong> same material <strong>the</strong>y skim by day over<br />

<strong>the</strong> waters, pastur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir flocks, or catch<strong>in</strong>g fish with <strong>the</strong><br />

spear. To susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir life, <strong>the</strong>y cultivate a little rice,<br />

barlev, and maize, on <strong>the</strong> edges of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>undations. Generallv<br />

good-natured and humorous like children, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

Ma'dan tribes get easily excited, and at <strong>the</strong> slightest provocation<br />

are ready to fight with each o<strong>the</strong>r. Practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

vices more than <strong>the</strong> virtues of <strong>the</strong> Arab race, extremely<br />

ignorant and superstitious, <strong>the</strong>y live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most primitive<br />

state of barbarism and destitution, despised by <strong>the</strong><br />

Bedou<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> desert, who frequently drive <strong>the</strong>ir cattle and<br />

sheep away and plunder <strong>the</strong>ir little property dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter.<br />

Restlessly shift<strong>in</strong>g nomads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north and ignorant<br />

swamp dwellers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south have become <strong>the</strong> legitimate<br />

heirs of Asshur and Babel. What contrast between ancient<br />

civilization and modern degeneration ! The mighty k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of vore have passed awav, <strong>the</strong>ir empires were shattered,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir countries destroved. N<strong>in</strong>eveh and Babylon seemed<br />

completely to have vanished from <strong>the</strong> earth. Hundreds of<br />

vears were necessarv to revive <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir history<br />

and to determ<strong>in</strong>e merely <strong>the</strong>ir sites, while <strong>the</strong> exploration<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>in</strong>cipal ru<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> decipher<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>scriptions,
