DURING 19 <strong>in</strong> CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 315<br />

threw <strong>the</strong>ir scrapers and baskets away and commenced <strong>the</strong><br />

war-dance, brandish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir spears or guns <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air and<br />

chant<strong>in</strong>g some defiant sentence especially made up for <strong>the</strong><br />

occasion, as, e. g., " We are <strong>the</strong> slaves of Berdi," " The last<br />

day has come," " Down with <strong>the</strong> Christians," " Matches <strong>in</strong><br />

his beard who contradicts us," etc. The Turkish commissioner<br />

and <strong>the</strong> zabtiye (irregular soldiers), — whose number<br />

had been considerably <strong>in</strong>creased by <strong>the</strong> qaimmaqam of<br />

Diwanive, much aga<strong>in</strong>st our own will, — picked frequent<br />

quarrels with <strong>the</strong> natives and irritated <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong>ir overbear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

manners. The Arabs, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, were not<br />

slow <strong>in</strong> show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir absolute <strong>in</strong>dependence by wander<strong>in</strong>g<br />

unmolested around <strong>the</strong> camp, enter<strong>in</strong>g our private tents<br />

and exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our goods, like a crowd of naughty boys ;<br />

or by squatt<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

expressions at <strong>the</strong> Otto-<br />

and hurl<strong>in</strong>g taunt<strong>in</strong>g and offensive<br />

man government.<br />

It was also a mistake that we had pitched our tents on<br />

<strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s. For as <strong>the</strong> mounds of Nuffar had no<br />

recognized owner and yet were claimed by <strong>the</strong> Turks, <strong>the</strong><br />

Bedou<strong>in</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong> Ma'dan tribes at <strong>the</strong> same time, we were<br />

practically under nobody's protection, while by our very conspicuous<br />

position we not only suffered exceed<strong>in</strong>gly from hot<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ds and suffocat<strong>in</strong>g sand storms, but <strong>in</strong>vited plunder<strong>in</strong>g by<br />

every loiterer and marauder <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood. Moreover,<br />

unacqua<strong>in</strong>ted as we all were <strong>the</strong>n with <strong>the</strong> peculiar<br />

customs of Central Babylonia, we had not provided a mudhif<br />

or lodg<strong>in</strong>g-house, a spacious and airy sari/a, which <strong>in</strong> every<br />

large village of <strong>the</strong> country is set apart for <strong>the</strong> reception of<br />

travellers and guests. What wonder that <strong>the</strong> simple-m<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

children of <strong>the</strong> desert and <strong>the</strong> half-naked peasants of <strong>the</strong><br />

marshes, who noticed our strange mode of liv<strong>in</strong>g and saw so<br />

many unknown th<strong>in</strong>gs with us for which <strong>the</strong>y had no need<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, shook <strong>the</strong>ir heads <strong>in</strong> amazement. On <strong>the</strong> one<br />

hand <strong>the</strong>y observed how we spent large sums of money for
