us acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong> low ebb <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ances of <strong>the</strong> expedition.<br />

It was, <strong>the</strong>refore, decided to close <strong>the</strong> excavations of<br />

<strong>the</strong> first campaign at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of May. But <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

season was brought to a conclusion more quickly than<br />

could have been anticipated. The trouble started with <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabs. The methodical exploration of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s had proceeded<br />

satisfactorily for about n<strong>in</strong>e weeks till<br />

April, tablets be<strong>in</strong>g found abundantly, and <strong>the</strong><br />

of ancient Nippur becom<strong>in</strong>g more lucid everyday.<br />

those countless difficulties which, more or less, every<br />

expedition work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of Babylonia far away<br />

has to meet at nearly every turn, we began<br />

to enjoy <strong>the</strong> life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert and to get accustomed to <strong>the</strong><br />

manners of <strong>the</strong> fickle Arabs, whose pr<strong>in</strong>cipal " virtues<br />

seemed to consist <strong>in</strong> ly<strong>in</strong>g, steal<strong>in</strong>g, murder<strong>in</strong>g, and lasciviousness.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> 'Afej, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, had gradually<br />

abandoned <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>al distrust, after <strong>the</strong>y had satisfied<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves that <strong>the</strong><br />

Americans had no <strong>in</strong>tention of erect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a new military station out of <strong>the</strong> bricks of <strong>the</strong> old walls<br />

<strong>the</strong> purpose of collect<strong>in</strong>g arrears of government taxes.<br />

But<br />

<strong>the</strong>re existed certa<strong>in</strong> conditions <strong>in</strong> our camp and around us<br />

which, sooner or later,<br />

had to lead to serious complications.<br />

Hajji Tarfa, <strong>the</strong> supreme shaikh of all <strong>the</strong> 'Afej tribes, a<br />

man of great diplomatic skill, liberal views and far-reach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence, was unfortunately absent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shamiye when we<br />

commenced operations at Nuffar. His eldest son, Mukota,<br />

who meanwhile took <strong>the</strong> place of his fa<strong>the</strong>r, was a sneak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Arab of <strong>the</strong> lowest type, little respected by his followers,<br />

begg<strong>in</strong>g for everyth<strong>in</strong>g that came under his eyes, turbulent,<br />

treacherous, and a coward, and brood<strong>in</strong>g mischief all <strong>the</strong><br />

while. Two of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal 'Afej tribes, <strong>the</strong> Hamza and <strong>the</strong><br />

Behahtha, both of which laid claim to <strong>the</strong> mounds we had<br />

occupied, and <strong>in</strong>sisted on furnish<strong>in</strong>g workmen for our excavations,<br />

were at war with each o<strong>the</strong>r. At <strong>the</strong> slightest provocation<br />

and frequently without any apparent reason <strong>the</strong>y
