bricks <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong>ir Babylonian orig<strong>in</strong> ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> numerous<br />

tells<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood of Mahmudiye mentioned above,<br />

especially Der, 1 which yielded only <strong>the</strong> common bricks of<br />

Nebuchadrezzar; and above all, <strong>the</strong> enormous ru<strong>in</strong>s of Tell<br />

Ibrahim, about fifteen miles to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast of Hilla, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> nest of mounds situated to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast of it.' 2<br />

Under<br />

extraord<strong>in</strong>ary deprivations caused by <strong>the</strong> absence of water<br />

and frequent sandstorms, several of his best gangs of workmen<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed a month <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert around Tell Ibrahim.<br />

But though <strong>the</strong>y showed a rare energy and labored with all<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir might, open<strong>in</strong>g no less than twenty different tunnels<br />

and trenches and penetrat<strong>in</strong>g deep <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> mass of rubbish,<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g but stray bricks of Nebuchadrezzar, a few cuneiform<br />

tablets and terra-cotta bowls covered with Hebrew<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions had been brought to light when <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

quitted this <strong>in</strong>hospitable region.<br />

We cannot close this sketch of Rassam's archaeological<br />

work <strong>in</strong> Babylonia without referr<strong>in</strong>g briefly to his hasty visit<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn districts of 'Iraq, which lasted from February<br />

24 to March 13, 1879.<br />

The news of De Sarzec's<br />

secret proceed<strong>in</strong>gs at Tello had spread rapidly among <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabs, and naturally reached <strong>the</strong> ear of Rassam immediately<br />

after his arrival at Baghdad, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of February,<br />

1879. A faithful and jealous guardian of British <strong>in</strong>terests,<br />

as he proved to be dur<strong>in</strong>g his long career <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> East,<br />

he decided at once to exam<strong>in</strong>e those remarkable ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

person with a view of occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, if possible, for his<br />

own government somewhat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same manner as he previously<br />

had obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> palace of Ashurbanapal <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of Qoyunjuk. His task seemed to be facilitated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> circumstance that De Sarzec had made his first<br />
