occupied <strong>the</strong> throne of his fa<strong>the</strong>r for about half a <strong>century</strong>.<br />

They <strong>in</strong>struct us concern<strong>in</strong>g many valuable chronological,<br />

historical, and geographical details, among o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

furnish<strong>in</strong>g almost def<strong>in</strong>itive new proof for <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory that<br />

Dungi, " k<strong>in</strong>g of Ur, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> four quarters of <strong>the</strong><br />

world," and Dungi, " k<strong>in</strong>g of Ur, k<strong>in</strong>g of Shumer and<br />

Akkad," are one and <strong>the</strong> same person.<br />

Towards <strong>the</strong> middle of February, 1900, <strong>the</strong> French explorer<br />

descended <strong>the</strong> Tigris for <strong>the</strong> last time, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

reach Kud(t) el- c Amara and <strong>the</strong> scene of his activity on <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern bank of <strong>the</strong> Shatt el-Hai. At <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong><br />

present writer ascended <strong>the</strong> river, be<strong>in</strong>g on his way to Baghdad<br />

and to <strong>the</strong> swamps of <strong>the</strong> c Afej. A heavy thunderstorm<br />

was rag<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> barren pla<strong>in</strong>s of 'Iraq, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> muddy waters of <strong>the</strong> Tigris began suddenly to rise,<br />

greatlv <strong>in</strong>terfer<strong>in</strong>g with my progress, when <strong>the</strong> two steamers<br />

came <strong>in</strong> sight of each o<strong>the</strong>r. I stood on <strong>the</strong> bridge of<br />

<strong>the</strong> English " Khalifa," <strong>in</strong>tently look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Turkish vessel, which flew <strong>the</strong> French colors from <strong>the</strong> top<br />

of its mast. A tall figure could be fa<strong>in</strong>tly dist<strong>in</strong>guished on<br />

<strong>the</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g boat, lean<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st its<br />

iron rail<strong>in</strong>g and eagerly<br />

scann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> horizon with a field-glass. A flash of light<br />

separated <strong>the</strong> thick black clouds which had changed day<br />

<strong>in</strong>to twilight, and illum<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>the</strong> two steamers for a moment.<br />

I recognized <strong>the</strong> features of De Sarzec, <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

(1899) appo<strong>in</strong>ted m<strong>in</strong>ister plenipotentiary of France, who<br />

<strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>stant had drawn a handkerchief, which he waved<br />

lustilv on his fast disappear<strong>in</strong>g boat as a greet<strong>in</strong>g of welcome<br />

to <strong>the</strong> representative of <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia expedition.<br />

A month later a cordial and urgent <strong>in</strong>vitation was received<br />

from <strong>the</strong> French camp near Tello. I still regret that at<br />

that moment mv own press<strong>in</strong>g duties at <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of Nuffar<br />

did not allow of an even short visit<br />

to Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Babylonia,<br />

and that consequently I missed my last chance of see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

De Sarzec <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst of his trenches and direct<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

famous excavations <strong>in</strong> person.
