bricks, upon which <strong>the</strong>se first<br />

large collections of clay tablets<br />

from Tello were arranged <strong>in</strong> five or six layers, one<br />

Nearly all <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g museums of Europe and America<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> a source of deep regret that <strong>the</strong> French government<br />

does not appear to have succeeded <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g regular<br />

guards at Tello. 1 Even when De Sarzec was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field,<br />

<strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s were not sufficiently protected at night, to say<br />

<strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g Arabs, who soon began to realize <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

value of <strong>the</strong>se almost <strong>in</strong>exhaustible m<strong>in</strong>es. 2 A large<br />

number of <strong>the</strong> stolen tablets are still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands of <strong>the</strong><br />

antiquity dealers. At first greedily bought by <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sure expectation of an extraord<strong>in</strong>arv ga<strong>in</strong>, this archaeological<br />

contraband began recently to disappo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong><br />

comparatively un<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and monotonous contents of<br />

<strong>the</strong> average clay tablet from Tello offer<strong>in</strong>g too little attraction<br />

to most of <strong>the</strong> Assvriological students.<br />
