directly to <strong>the</strong> outer walls, but are disconnected by a passageway<br />

or corridor over two feet and a half wide, runn<strong>in</strong>g parallel<br />

with <strong>the</strong> latter and also separat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> two rooms from each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. These <strong>in</strong>ner chambers likewise have no open<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

With good reason, <strong>the</strong>refore, Heuzey regards this curious<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g as a regular store or provision house similarly<br />

constructed to those known <strong>in</strong> ancient Egypt. This view<br />

is streng<strong>the</strong>ned by <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions of Ur-<br />

N<strong>in</strong>a, Enannatum, Urukag<strong>in</strong>a, and especially those of<br />

Entemena repeatedly refer 1 to such a magaz<strong>in</strong>e or depot<br />

of <strong>the</strong> god N<strong>in</strong>-Su(n)gir. The ancient k<strong>in</strong>gs and patesis of<br />

Lagash used to fill it with gra<strong>in</strong>, dates, sesame oil, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

produce of <strong>the</strong> country required for <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of <strong>the</strong><br />

temple servants, or needed as supplies for <strong>the</strong>ir armies,<br />

which fought frequent battles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong>ir tutelary<br />

deitv. The double walls, which form a characteristic feature<br />

also of a number of chambers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> outer wall of <strong>the</strong> huge<br />

Parthian fortress at Nippur, were useful <strong>in</strong> more than one<br />

regard. They excluded <strong>the</strong> extreme heat of <strong>the</strong> summer<br />

and <strong>the</strong> humidity of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter, while, at <strong>the</strong> same time,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>sured <strong>the</strong> safety of <strong>the</strong> stored provisions aga<strong>in</strong>st damage<br />

from crevices, thieves, and troublesome <strong>in</strong>sects. A coat<br />

of bitumen cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> walls<br />

and floors of <strong>the</strong> rooms and<br />

corridor answered <strong>the</strong> same purpose.<br />

At a distance of thirteen feet from <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

De Sarzec discovered eight bases made of baked brick, two<br />

on each side, which orig<strong>in</strong>ally supported as many square<br />

pillars, clearly <strong>in</strong>dicated by <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s of charred cedarwood<br />

found near thpm. It is <strong>the</strong>refore apparent that a large<br />

gallery, a k<strong>in</strong>d of portico or peristyle, as we frequently see it<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong> modern houses of Kurdish and Armenian<br />

peasants <strong>in</strong> Asia M<strong>in</strong>or, surrounded <strong>the</strong> ancient Babylonian<br />

edifice on all four sides, furnish<strong>in</strong>g additional room for <strong>the</strong><br />

temporary storage of goods, agricultural implements, and<br />
