DURING 19 CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 243<br />

<strong>in</strong>dex— and <strong>in</strong> some <strong>in</strong>stances bear<strong>in</strong>g a long legend of <strong>the</strong><br />

monarch just mentioned. After a brief reference to his reign<br />

and pr<strong>in</strong>cipal military expeditions, this ruler glorifies <strong>in</strong><br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

constructed " <strong>the</strong> great terrace of <strong>the</strong> well," i. e., <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

extended <strong>the</strong> crude brick terrace of his<br />

predecessor so far as<br />

to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong> it <strong>the</strong> mouths of <strong>the</strong>se two water supplies<br />

which he raised from <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> up to <strong>the</strong> level of Ur-N<strong>in</strong>a's<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs. 1 From <strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g debris came some f<strong>in</strong>e<br />

pieces of carved or <strong>in</strong>cised shell,<br />

show<strong>in</strong>g spirited scenes of<br />

men, animals and plants, and doubtless belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

same general epoch. A good many similar specimens of this<br />

important branch of ancient Chaldean art, a few of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

colored, have been recently obta<strong>in</strong>ed from various o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

central and south-Babylonian ru<strong>in</strong>s by <strong>the</strong> present writer. 2<br />

A rectangular massive build<strong>in</strong>g, rema<strong>in</strong>s of a gate, and<br />

several artificial reservoirs differ<strong>in</strong>g greatly <strong>in</strong> size and form<br />

were brought to light to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast and nor<strong>the</strong>ast of<br />

Enannatuma's wells. A few <strong>in</strong>scribed bricks and a number<br />

of copper figur<strong>in</strong>es carry<strong>in</strong>g alabaster tablets upon <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

heads <strong>in</strong>dicated sufficiently that most of <strong>the</strong>se structures<br />

were <strong>the</strong> work of Entemena, nephew of <strong>the</strong> last-mentioned<br />

patesi of Shir-pur-la. Some of <strong>the</strong>m may have been rebuilt<br />

<strong>in</strong> subsequent times, but preced<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> governments of<br />

Ur-Bau and Gudea. Not without good reason Heuzey<br />

proposed to identify <strong>the</strong> terrace to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast with <strong>the</strong><br />

substructure of <strong>the</strong> Ab{Esh)-gi z mentioned on some of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>scribed bricks taken from <strong>the</strong> former, and <strong>the</strong> sacred enclosure<br />

to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast, which <strong>in</strong> part at least can be still<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ed by means of <strong>the</strong> copper figur<strong>in</strong>es found <strong>in</strong> situ,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ab-bi-ru A<br />

of <strong>the</strong> alabaster tablets.<br />
