DURING 19TB. CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 235<br />

<strong>the</strong> "stele of vultures " previously mentioned; 1 and <strong>the</strong><br />

first<br />

fragment of an <strong>in</strong>scribed tablet of Ur-N<strong>in</strong>a, exhibit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> lion-headed eagle with outspread w<strong>in</strong>gs victoriously<br />

clutch<strong>in</strong>g two lions <strong>in</strong> its<br />

coat of arms of <strong>the</strong> city<br />

powerful talons, — <strong>the</strong> well-known<br />

of Shir-pur-la?<br />

The last-named monument enabled Heuzey to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

earliest rema<strong>in</strong>s of Chaldean art, so scrupulously ga<strong>the</strong>red by<br />

De Sarzec, <strong>in</strong>to closer relation with <strong>the</strong> ancient k<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

Tello.<br />

He ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed that, contrary to what we know of<br />

<strong>the</strong> first pr<strong>in</strong>ces of Assyria, <strong>the</strong> rulers who style <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

" k<strong>in</strong>gs of Shir-pur-la " are older 3 than those who bear <strong>the</strong><br />

title patesi, i. e., " priest-k<strong>in</strong>g," or more exactly " pr<strong>in</strong>cepriest,"<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>scriptions, — a result which allowed him<br />

at once to establish an approximate chronology for <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

discovered rulers of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Babylonia <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> progress <strong>in</strong> style to be traced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sculptures and basreliefs.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> French archaeologist determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

a number of general facts, 4<br />

on <strong>the</strong> basis of which he successfully<br />

defended <strong>the</strong> two follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ses, — (i)<br />

that <strong>the</strong> style<br />

of <strong>the</strong> monuments of Tello is not a style of imitation, but<br />

a real and genu<strong>in</strong>e archaism ;<br />

(a) that quite a number of <strong>the</strong><br />

monuments discovered antedate <strong>the</strong> remote epoch of K<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Naram-S<strong>in</strong> (about 3750 b. c. 5 ), and lead us back to <strong>the</strong> very<br />

This statement has reference only to <strong>the</strong> two pr<strong>in</strong>cipal groups of rulers<br />

of Lagash <strong>the</strong>n known. In all probability <strong>the</strong>re was still an earlier dynasty at<br />

Tello, <strong>the</strong> members of which bear <strong>the</strong> title patesi. Comp. Thureau-Dang<strong>in</strong><br />
