occupation to fill out <strong>the</strong> ample time left him by <strong>the</strong> slight<br />

duties of his consular position. Be<strong>in</strong>g stationed near <strong>the</strong><br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s of some of <strong>the</strong> great centres of ancient civilization,<br />

he<br />

decided at once to visit <strong>the</strong> sites of Babylon and El-Birs,<br />

and to devote his leisure hours, if practicable, to <strong>the</strong> exploration<br />

of a section of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Babylonia.<br />

He was very fortunate to f<strong>in</strong>d a trustworthy councillor <strong>in</strong><br />

J. Asfar, a prom<strong>in</strong>ent native Christian, and <strong>the</strong> present<br />

hospitable representative of <strong>the</strong> Strick-Asfar l<strong>in</strong>e of steamboats<br />

ply<strong>in</strong>g regularly between London and Basra. The<br />

latter had formerly dealt <strong>in</strong> antiquities and was personally<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with several Arab diggers, who cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to keep him well<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed as to <strong>the</strong> most promis<strong>in</strong>g ru<strong>in</strong>s<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Euphrates and <strong>the</strong> Tigris. The name of<br />

Tello had recentlv become a watchword among <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><br />

consequence of <strong>the</strong> discovery of <strong>in</strong>scribed bricks and cones<br />

and <strong>the</strong> partlv <strong>in</strong>scribed<br />

torso of a f<strong>in</strong>e statue of Gudea <strong>in</strong><br />

diorite, 1 said to have come from <strong>the</strong>se ru<strong>in</strong>s. 2 It is Asfar's<br />

merit to have first directed <strong>the</strong> attention of De Sarzec to<br />

this remarkable site and to have urged him to lose no time<br />

<strong>in</strong> exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g it more closely and <strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g it for France. 3<br />

In order to avoid undesirable public attention, <strong>the</strong> French<br />

vice-consul deemed it wise for <strong>the</strong> present not to apply for<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessary firman at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, but to beg<strong>in</strong> his<br />

No sufficient reasons have been brought forward, however, to show that<br />

this torso actually came from Tello. Mr. Leonard W. K<strong>in</strong>g, of <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Museum, whom I asked for <strong>in</strong>formation as to its place of orig<strong>in</strong>, was unable,<br />

to throw any light on this question. Comp. p. 221, note 1, below.<br />
