<strong>the</strong> second story. " Pieces of agate, alabaster, and marble,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ely cut and polished, small pieces of pure gold, goldheaded<br />

and pla<strong>in</strong> copper nails, cover <strong>the</strong> ground about <strong>the</strong><br />

basement" of <strong>the</strong> latter — sufficient to <strong>in</strong>dicate that a small<br />

Temple Ru<strong>in</strong> at Abu Shahra<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> South<br />

but richly embellished sacred chamber formerly crowned <strong>the</strong><br />

top of <strong>the</strong> second stage. Around <strong>the</strong> whole tower <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

a pavement of <strong>in</strong>scribed baked brick placed upon a large<br />

laver of clav two feet thick.<br />

From several trenches cut <strong>in</strong> various parts of <strong>the</strong>se remarkable<br />

mounds, Taylor reached <strong>the</strong> startl<strong>in</strong>g conclusion<br />

that all <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>ed build<strong>in</strong>gs he met with, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

ponderous mass of <strong>the</strong> stage-tower, rested on <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e sand<br />

of <strong>the</strong> desert conf<strong>in</strong>ed by a coat<strong>in</strong>g of sun-dried brick, upon<br />

which <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned sandstone wall rises. In contrast<br />

to all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Babylonian ru<strong>in</strong>s, where natural stone<br />

is almost entirely unknown as build<strong>in</strong>g material, we f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

sandstone and granite and marble liberally employed <strong>in</strong><br />

Abu Shahra<strong>in</strong>, a fact which illustrates and proves <strong>the</strong> correctness<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>orv that <strong>the</strong> extensive use of clay <strong>in</strong><br />

ancient Babylonia is due only to <strong>the</strong> complete absence of<br />

any k<strong>in</strong>d of stone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> alluvial ground of <strong>the</strong> country.
