DURING l<strong>in</strong>n CENTURY: ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 177<br />

he came across many fragments of <strong>in</strong>scribed cones.<br />

In <strong>the</strong><br />

long west mound he found two whole jars filled with clay<br />

tablets placed <strong>in</strong> envelopes of <strong>the</strong> same material, and frequently<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g seal impressions, <strong>in</strong> addition to over thirty<br />

stray tablets and fragments.<br />

Notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>significant funds and <strong>the</strong> short<br />

time placed at <strong>the</strong> disposal of our explorer, and notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> lack of a proper archaeological tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g so<br />

seriously felt<br />

by himself, and through which a large portion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> scientific results have been lost, Taylor's patient<br />

labors and attempts at disclos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> contents of Muqayyar<br />

were successful beyond expectation. Different travellers<br />

have s<strong>in</strong>ce visited <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s, tak<strong>in</strong>g measurements and pick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up a few objects here and <strong>the</strong>re on <strong>the</strong> surface ;<br />

all<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have added practically noth<strong>in</strong>g to our knowledge of those<br />

mounds, which is derived exclusively from <strong>the</strong> reports of<br />

Loftus and Taylor written nearly fifty years ago. The<br />

methodical exploration of Muqayyar and a complete restoration<br />

of its history belong still to <strong>the</strong> desirable th<strong>in</strong>gs expected<br />

from <strong>the</strong> future. There is hope, however, that even<br />

before <strong>the</strong> German railroad l<strong>in</strong>e from Baghdad to Basra has<br />

been constructed, an American expedition will<br />

start excavations<br />

at <strong>the</strong>se ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> twentieth <strong>century</strong>.<br />

Ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> lawlessness of <strong>the</strong> Arab tribes roam<strong>in</strong>g<br />

over that part of <strong>the</strong> desert, and no less to <strong>the</strong> swampy<br />

condition of <strong>the</strong> neighborhood of Muqayvar dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

annual <strong>in</strong>undations, <strong>the</strong>re are peculiar difficulties to be overcome<br />

here, similar to those prevail<strong>in</strong>g at Nippur and Warka.<br />

But with <strong>the</strong> necessary tact and determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong>y can be<br />

overcome, and <strong>the</strong> mounds, considerably smaller <strong>in</strong> extent<br />

than ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> two ru<strong>in</strong>s mentioned, can be thoroughlv<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>formation received by cable from Dr. Banks, <strong>the</strong> director<br />

of <strong>the</strong> planned Expedition to Ur, at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of October, 1901, <strong>the</strong><br />

Ottoman Government has decl<strong>in</strong>ed to grant him a firman for <strong>the</strong> excavation<br />

of<br />

Muqavvar.
