Adverse circumstances and unavoidable delays kept <strong>the</strong><br />

members of <strong>the</strong> expedition three months on <strong>the</strong>ir way from<br />

France to Alexandretta, a<br />

time which <strong>the</strong>y employed to <strong>the</strong><br />

best of <strong>the</strong>ir ability <strong>in</strong> exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ancient rema<strong>in</strong>s at<br />

Malta, Alexandria, Baalbek, and <strong>the</strong> Nahr el-Kelb above<br />

Beirut. With fortv mules <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>ally left Aleppo, and<br />

after an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g journey via Diarbekr, Mard<strong>in</strong>, and<br />

Nisib<strong>in</strong>, on March i, 1852, reached Mosul, where Victor<br />

Place had succeeded Botta<br />

representative of France, while<br />

as vice-consul and archaeological<br />

Lavard, hav<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ished his<br />

second successful campaign at Oovunjuk, had returned to<br />

Europe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous year. The very next day after<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir arrival on this historical ground <strong>the</strong> enthusiastic French<br />

commission visited Place at Khorsabad, who had but recently<br />

commenced his operations <strong>the</strong>re. For three weeks <strong>the</strong>y<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed at Mosul, occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves with a study of<br />

<strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> city, exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of N<strong>in</strong>eveh on<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong> river, tak<strong>in</strong>g squeezes, copy<strong>in</strong>g cuneiform<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions, and prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

ways for <strong>the</strong>ir impend<strong>in</strong>g task at Babylon. As soon as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

large raft of three hundred goat-sk<strong>in</strong>s was f<strong>in</strong>ished, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

embarked and descended <strong>the</strong> Tigris, arriv<strong>in</strong>g at Baghdad<br />

five days<br />

later.<br />

As we have seen above <strong>in</strong><br />

connection with Layard's visit<br />

to Babylonia, <strong>the</strong>re prevailed at <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> last<br />

<strong>century</strong> a general state of anarchv <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of<br />

that country.<br />

Large parties of roam<strong>in</strong>g Arabs, defy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

authority of <strong>the</strong> Turkish governor, were constantly plunder<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pilgrims and caravans, and even made <strong>the</strong> neighborhood<br />

of Baghdad very unsafe. The French expedition<br />

was not slow <strong>in</strong> recogniz<strong>in</strong>g its unfavorable position. Men<br />

like Rawl<strong>in</strong>son, who were thoroughlv familiar with <strong>the</strong><br />

country and its <strong>in</strong>habitants, advised <strong>the</strong> three members<br />

stronglv to devote <strong>the</strong>ir first attention ra<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> Median<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s, Oppert himself propos<strong>in</strong>g to explore <strong>the</strong> site of
