<strong>the</strong> deserted mounds to a considerable depth, should<br />

accidentally have struck hundreds of clay tablets and sealcvl<strong>in</strong>ders,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y moved out of <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>al rest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

places to an upper stratum, thus fill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> burial ground<br />

with <strong>the</strong> literary and artistic rema<strong>in</strong>s of an older period,<br />

and creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impression upon <strong>the</strong> un<strong>in</strong>itiated or careless<br />

observer that<br />

<strong>the</strong> burials are contemporary with those antiquities,<br />

and that <strong>the</strong> latter furnish us a real clue for determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> age of <strong>the</strong> former. In <strong>the</strong> first years of our<br />

own excavations at NufTar I was frequently misled by <strong>the</strong><br />

positive statements of those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field, occasionally quot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Loftus and Taylor as <strong>the</strong>ir authorities, until by personally<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g charge of <strong>the</strong> expedition, I<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

that with but few exceptions, which can easily be expla<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

<strong>the</strong> large mass of tombs at NufTar is later than 400 b. c,<br />

though often found thirty feet and more below <strong>the</strong> surface.<br />

Many of <strong>the</strong> tablets discovered by Loftus were wrapped<br />

<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong> clay envelopes, similarly <strong>in</strong>scribed, and like <strong>the</strong><br />

enclosed document covered with<br />

<strong>the</strong> impressions of seal cyl<strong>in</strong>ders.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>rs, also bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impressions<br />

of cyl<strong>in</strong>ders, were triangular<br />

<strong>in</strong> shape. From <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that at <strong>the</strong>ir corners <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

holes through which cords must<br />

have passed, it became evident,<br />

even without decipher<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions, that <strong>the</strong>y were used<br />

found Babylonian documents of this class to belong to <strong>the</strong><br />

second half of <strong>the</strong> third pre-Christian millennium. Of<br />

especial value and <strong>in</strong>terest was a certa<strong>in</strong> tablet which proved<br />

to be a table of squares from one to sixty, both numbers
