ancient Erech above o<strong>the</strong>rs, establish<strong>in</strong>g even a k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir own <strong>in</strong> those regions. The large stratum of <strong>in</strong>tentionally<br />

broken <strong>in</strong>scribed vases, statues, reliefs, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

objects of art of <strong>the</strong> earliest Babylonian period surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> temple court of Nippur, which I have shown to be <strong>the</strong><br />

results of revengeful Klamite destruction, <strong>in</strong>dicates what we<br />

may expect to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle strata of Warka. In order<br />

to reach <strong>the</strong>se deeper strata, a heavy super<strong>in</strong>cumbent mass<br />

of rubbish and funereal rema<strong>in</strong>s, represent<strong>in</strong>g a period of<br />

about one thousand years after <strong>the</strong> fall of <strong>the</strong> Neo-Babylonian<br />

empire, has to be exam<strong>in</strong>ed and removed.<br />

In itself, any ancient city cont<strong>in</strong>uously <strong>in</strong>habited for at<br />

least 5000 years, and repeatedly occupied by hostile armies, as<br />

Erech was, must be regarded as a site most unfavorable to<br />

<strong>the</strong> discovery of large and well preserved earlier antiquities.<br />

As a rule <strong>the</strong>se latter, if escap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vicissitudes of war,<br />

have been transferred from generation to generation until<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were consumed or damaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir natural cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

use, while o<strong>the</strong>rs, perhaps <strong>in</strong>tact at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time when <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

hidden under collaps<strong>in</strong>g walls, have been frequentlv afterwards<br />

brought to light <strong>in</strong><br />

connection with <strong>the</strong> thousands of<br />

later burials. No longer understood or appreciated by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants of a subsequent age, and frequentlv also of<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r race and religion, <strong>the</strong>y were often <strong>in</strong>tentionally<br />

broken and employed <strong>in</strong> a manner quite different from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al purpose.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts just mentioned, <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

conditions around Warka are even worse than at Nuffar.<br />

From February or March to July <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>undations of <strong>the</strong><br />

Euphrates extend frequentlv almost to <strong>the</strong> very base of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s. The swamps thus formed are swarm<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>in</strong>numerable<br />

mosquitoes, which, with <strong>the</strong> even more dreaded<br />

sand-flies of <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g desert, render <strong>the</strong> life of <strong>the</strong><br />

explorer extremely miserable. Towards <strong>the</strong> latter part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> summer <strong>the</strong> waters recede. The human system, be<strong>in</strong>g
