<strong>in</strong>scriptions, " <strong>the</strong> subject be<strong>in</strong>g frequently conf<strong>in</strong>ed to one<br />

tablet, and arranged with some attempt at composition, so<br />

as to form a separate picture." Here <strong>the</strong> four walls of a<br />

chamber were generally adorned " by one series of sculptures,<br />

represent<strong>in</strong>g a consecutive history, un<strong>in</strong>terrupted by<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions, or by <strong>the</strong> divisions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> alabaster panell<strong>in</strong>g."<br />

Short epigraphs or labels, as a rule placed on <strong>the</strong> upper part<br />

of <strong>the</strong> stones, give <strong>the</strong> names of <strong>the</strong> conquered country, city,<br />

and even of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal prisoners and historical events<br />

pictured below. Hundreds of figures cover <strong>the</strong> face of <strong>the</strong><br />

slabs from top to bottom. We become acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with<br />

<strong>the</strong> peculiarities, <strong>in</strong> type and dress, of foreign nations, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> characteristic features and products of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>lands</strong> ; we are<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> very life and occupations of <strong>the</strong> persons<br />

represented. The sculptor shows us <strong>the</strong> Babylonian swamps<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir jungles of tall reeds, frequented by wild boars, and<br />

barbarous tribes skimm<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> waters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir light boats<br />

of wicker-work, exactly as <strong>the</strong>v are used to-day by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

of <strong>the</strong> same marshes ; or he takes us <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> high<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s of Kurdistan, covered with trees and crowned with<br />

castles, endeavor<strong>in</strong>g even to convey <strong>the</strong> idea of a valley by<br />

revers<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trees and mounta<strong>in</strong>s on one side of <strong>the</strong> stream,<br />

which is filled with fishes and crabs and turtles. He <strong>in</strong>dicates<br />

<strong>the</strong> different headgear worn by female musicians, or<br />

by captive women carried with <strong>the</strong>ir husbands and children<br />

to N<strong>in</strong>eveh. Some wear <strong>the</strong>ir hair <strong>in</strong> long r<strong>in</strong>glets, some<br />

platted or braided, some conf<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a net; o<strong>the</strong>rs are characterized<br />

by hoods fitt<strong>in</strong>g close over <strong>the</strong>ir heads, o<strong>the</strong>rs by<br />

a k<strong>in</strong>d of turban ; Elamite ladies have <strong>the</strong>ir hair <strong>in</strong> curls<br />

fall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir shoulders, and bound above <strong>the</strong> temples by<br />

a band or fillet, while those from Syria wear a high conical<br />

headdress, similar to that which is frequently found to-day<br />

<strong>in</strong> those regions. It is impossible to enter <strong>in</strong>to all <strong>the</strong><br />

details so faithfully represented. Without <strong>the</strong> knowledge<br />

of a s<strong>in</strong>gle cuneiform character, we learned <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal
