Among o<strong>the</strong>r relics of <strong>the</strong> past, Layard<br />

found a crouch<strong>in</strong>g lion <strong>in</strong> alabaster, a pair of w<strong>in</strong>ged lions<br />

<strong>in</strong> a coarse limestone, <strong>the</strong> bodies of two lions carved out of<br />

one stone and form<strong>in</strong>g a pedestal ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> statues of two exquisite<br />

but crumbl<strong>in</strong>g sph<strong>in</strong>xes, and several <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g bas-reliefs<br />

unit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> head of an eagle or a lion with <strong>the</strong> body and arms<br />

of a man. He could now def<strong>in</strong>itely prove that <strong>the</strong> slabs<br />

hi<strong>the</strong>rto found <strong>in</strong> this section of <strong>the</strong> mound, and orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

chiefly brought from <strong>the</strong> northwest edifice, were never meant<br />

to be exposed to view <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> later palace. " They were, <strong>in</strong><br />

fact, placed aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> wall of sun-dried bricks, and <strong>the</strong><br />

back of <strong>the</strong> slab, smoo<strong>the</strong>d preparatory to be<strong>in</strong>g resculptured,<br />

was turned towards <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of <strong>the</strong> chambers."<br />

order to ascerta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g who built<br />

this palace, he had to dig beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> slabs. By cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his researches <strong>in</strong> this new light, he soon found cuneiform<br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions which bore <strong>the</strong> name of Esarhaddon, k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Assyria (2 K<strong>in</strong>gs 19:37).<br />

Important as all <strong>the</strong>se discoveries turned out to be, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were far surpassed by his f<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>in</strong> two o<strong>the</strong>r sections of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s. In <strong>the</strong> largest room of <strong>the</strong> northwest palace,<br />

which apparently had served as <strong>the</strong> royal reception hall,<br />

a series of <strong>the</strong> most beautiful and most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g sculptures<br />

were brought to light, glorify<strong>in</strong>g K<strong>in</strong>g Ashurnasirapal<br />

(885-860 b. c.) <strong>in</strong> war and peace. All <strong>the</strong> scenes are realistic<br />

and full of life, executed with great care and spirit.<br />

Here <strong>the</strong> monarch is followed by his warriors, himself stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> a chariot and discharg<strong>in</strong>g arrows, while enemies are<br />

tumbl<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong>ir horses or fall<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> turrets of a<br />

besieged city ; <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>in</strong> a boat, he is cross<strong>in</strong>g a river full of<br />

tortoises and fishes, and l<strong>in</strong>ed with date-groves and gardens ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, aga<strong>in</strong>, he receives <strong>the</strong> prisoners, led by warriors and<br />

counted by scribes, or he is return<strong>in</strong>g victoriously <strong>in</strong> procession,<br />

followed by his army and preceded by musicians<br />

and standard-bearers, while above <strong>the</strong>m fly vultures with<br />
