compelled, much aga<strong>in</strong>st my <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation, to abandon <strong>the</strong><br />

excavations <strong>in</strong> this part of <strong>the</strong> mound, after uncover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

portions of two chambers." Or aga<strong>in</strong> :<br />

" If, after carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a trench to a reasonable depth and distance, no rema<strong>in</strong>s of<br />

sculpture or <strong>in</strong>scription appeared, I abandoned it and renewed<br />

<strong>the</strong> experiment elsewhere."<br />

In view of <strong>the</strong> unsatisfactory manner <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> excavations<br />

at Nimrud were now conducted, it would be an<br />

exceed<strong>in</strong>glv unpleasant task to follow Layard <strong>in</strong>to all <strong>the</strong><br />

different trenches which he cut at many parts of <strong>the</strong> mound<br />

for no o<strong>the</strong>r purpose than to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest possible<br />

number of well-preserved objects of art at <strong>the</strong> least possible<br />

outlay of time and money. The w<strong>in</strong>ter season was fast<br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In order to protect himself sufficiently aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong> dangers of <strong>the</strong> climate and <strong>the</strong> thievish <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

of <strong>the</strong> maraud<strong>in</strong>g Bedou<strong>in</strong>s, he constructed his own house<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> near <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s, and settled <strong>the</strong> Arab workmen<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir families and friends around this temporary abode.<br />

Fifty strong<br />

Nestorian Christians, who wielded <strong>the</strong> pickaxe<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trenches, were quartered with <strong>the</strong>ir wives and children<br />

<strong>in</strong> a house on <strong>the</strong> mound itself. By <strong>the</strong> first of November<br />

<strong>the</strong> excavations were recommenced on a large scale at different<br />

sections :<br />

at <strong>the</strong> northwest and southwest build<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> mound, near <strong>the</strong> gigantic bulls<br />

mentioned<br />

above ; <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast corner, where no walls as yet had<br />

been discovered, and <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s hi<strong>the</strong>rto<br />

unexam<strong>in</strong>ed. The first six weeks follow<strong>in</strong>g this new arrangement<br />

" were amongst <strong>the</strong> most prosperous and fruitful <strong>in</strong><br />

events " dur<strong>in</strong>g all his researches <strong>in</strong> Assyria. Scarcely a<br />

day passed by without some new and important discovery.<br />

The trenches carried to a considerable depth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

corner yielded at first noth<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>in</strong>scribed bricks and<br />

pottery and several clay coff<strong>in</strong>s of a late period ; but those<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> southwest palace brought to light a number of very
