It soon became evident that<br />

he had found <strong>the</strong> earliest palace of Nimrud, from which<br />

many of <strong>the</strong> sculptures employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction of <strong>the</strong><br />

southwest build<strong>in</strong>g had been quarried.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se discoveries he rode to<br />

<strong>the</strong> encampment of a neighbor<strong>in</strong>g shaikh, and was return<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to his trenches, when he observed two Arabs of <strong>the</strong><br />

latter's<br />

tribe " urg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir mares to <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong>ir speed.<br />

On approach<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>the</strong>y stopped.<br />

Hasten, O Bey,'<br />

exclaimed one of <strong>the</strong>m ;<br />

' hasten to <strong>the</strong> diggers, for <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have found Nimrod himself. Wallah, it is wonderful, but<br />

it is true ! we have seen him with our eyes. There is no<br />

God but God ; ' and both jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this pious exclamation,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y galloped off without fur<strong>the</strong>r words <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir tents." On reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s, he ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

that <strong>the</strong> workmen had discovered <strong>the</strong> enormous human<br />

head of one of those w<strong>in</strong>ged lions which now adorn <strong>the</strong><br />

British Museum. An equally well preserved correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

figure was disclosed before nightfall<br />

about twelve feet away<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rubbish, both form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn entrance <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

chamber.<br />

Unfortunately " one of <strong>the</strong> workmen, on catch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> first glimpse of <strong>the</strong> monster, had thrown down his<br />

basket and run off towards Mosul as fast as his legs could<br />

carry him. ... He had scarcely checked his speed before<br />

reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bridge. Enter<strong>in</strong>g breathless <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bazaars,<br />

he announced to every one he met that Nimrod had appeared."<br />

The result of this unexpected occurrence became<br />

quickly apparent. The governor, " not remember<strong>in</strong>g very<br />

clearly whe<strong>the</strong>r Nimrod was a true-believ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

prophet or an<br />

<strong>in</strong>fidel," sent a somewhat un<strong>in</strong>telligible message "to <strong>the</strong><br />

effect that <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s should be treated with respect, and be<br />

by no means fur<strong>the</strong>r disturbed, and that he wished <strong>the</strong> excavations<br />

to be stopped at once." This was practically <strong>the</strong><br />

last <strong>in</strong>terference with Layard's work on <strong>the</strong> part of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mohammedan population. In accordance with <strong>the</strong> official
