governor had quickly restored confidence among <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

of <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Even <strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong>s were return<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir old camp<strong>in</strong>g grounds between <strong>the</strong> Tigris and Zab,<br />

from which for a long while <strong>the</strong>y had been excluded. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>cessant w<strong>in</strong>ter ra<strong>in</strong>s had brought forward <strong>the</strong> vegetation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> surface and sides of Nimrud were clo<strong>the</strong>d<br />

<strong>in</strong> a pleas<strong>in</strong>g green. Security hav<strong>in</strong>g been established <strong>in</strong><br />

this part of <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong> mound itself now offered a<br />

more convenient and more agreeable residence to Layard<br />

than <strong>the</strong> distant village of Selamiye. Accompanied by a<br />

number of workmen and by Hormuzd Rassam, an <strong>in</strong>telligent<br />

Chaldean Christian and bro<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> British viceconsul<br />

Abandon<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> edifice, which until <strong>the</strong>n had received his<br />
